Travel Tips for Launceston

A High-Light of your trip to Launceston

by ATXtraveler

Tasmania has a long history of ship wrecks, primarilly because of its rocky coast, and alignment with heavy trade winds. When shipwrecks begin occuring, lighthouses go up!

LowHead Lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse in Tasmania, and the third oldest in all of Australia.

LowHead is located just north of GeorgeTown, which is on the east bank of the Tamar Valley at the northern portion of Tasmania.

It was a nice hour drive from Launceston.

Located 17kms from Launceston on the Bass Highway, you bypass the town. Take the turnoff into the town, its lovely and quiet now the bulk of traffic doesn't come through here.

Another historic town, with gorgeous old georgian buildings and settlers cottages. The RED FEATHER INN which is located on the main road, was built in 1844. It was one of the 1st coaching inns in Tasmania and now is a Restraurant.

THE CHURCH OF GOOD SHEPHERD also on main road, was going to be built and paid for by the owner of the large Entally House, but after an argument with the Bishop, he withdrew his support.
Entally House is one of the most impressive historic homes in Tasmania and is open to the public. Admission 2008 is $8.

Launceston

"What a surprise"

Arrived at Launceston and was immediately drawn to the Docks area. A really pretty spot with lots of interesteing things to see and do. Declined to go on a river cruise but these are available for people who are into them. Loved the idea that all those houses had such wonderful views of the place.

Here is a pic of the dock area - river cruises can be taken from here.

Just some of the amazing monuments from the 19th century that abound in Launceston. This is from the park in the centre of town.
