REMARKABLE CAVE NEAR PORT ARTHUR
by balhannah
The cave is tunnel carved through the
rock face by erosion from the Southern Ocean. A walkway of about 100 steps will take you to a viewing platform. It is called Remarkable Cave because at low tide, it looks like a map of Tasmania. I just drew a line on my photo so that you can see what I mean.
Located at the end of Safety Cove Road, it is 12kms south of Port Arthur.
TASMAN ARCH & BLOWHOLE
by balhannah
Tasman Arch is located near Remarkable cave. Over the years, waves have eroded the bottom layers and the stronger ones on top are still standing. The Blowhole is also here, when the waves build up pressure, they spurt water through the hole.
HARBOUR CRUISE - PORT ARTHUR
by balhannah
The 20 minute harbour cruise aboard a catamaran is included in the admission price, and should not be missed!
We enjoyed this informative cruise, as it was on here that we learnt about the boys prison of Point Puer.............
The juvenile convicts, were as young as nine, arrested for stealing toys and sent out to Australia. The boys were separated from the main convict population and kept on Point Puer, the British Empire's first boys' prison.
Like the adults, the boys were used in hard labour such as stone cutting and construction, what a hard life they had.......
and .......
The Isle of the Dead.
Here, hundreds of convicts and ex-convict paupers were interred in mass graves, while the resting places of the 180 "free settlers" who died at Port Arthur are located on the upper part of the Island. Their elaborate headstones were done by convict stonemasons.
The cruise gave us stunning views of the complete site, passing the Dockyard area where boats were built and repaired.
The Militairy Area
by Henk.Irene
ALWAYS ON GUARD
The military area is nexts the administration area. It also sits on high ground, so that the soldiers were able to defend themselves and look out for trouble. Security was their main responsibility. Most regiments posted here regarded it as a low point in their history.
The barracks (1831-1847) were extended several times. The Tower Cottage (1854) provided additional officier housing. The Guard Tower (1842) contained a storeroom for guns and ammunition, a guard room and a watch tower.
After the settlement closed, most of the military complex was demolished.
The 1897 bushfires destroyed much of what remained.
