Travel Tips for Queenstown

Tasmania - Queenstown

by Intrepidduck

"Tasmania's West Coast Revival Town"

There have been some crule jokes about Queenstown and some true stories of environmental devestation in this town's history and development as a gold and copper minning settlement. However the Earth has been forgiving to Queenie and this wild west looking township is at another crossroads with a tourist gold rush well under way. The vast natural areas which lay just over the backdrop of dennuded hills is its bonus. For the traveller and tourist alike who come here there is a wild and unspoilt wilderness at your door step.

With the reconstruction of the Adt "Wilderness" Railway running from Queenstown to Strahan this struggling minning town has been put back on the map. It may not be the most beautiful town on earth, but certainly has some character and a remoteness about it. If you have the time its worth a visit while on your way to Strahan.

"Tasmania's West Coast Revival Town"

In 2000 I spent several weeks in a friend's old miners cottage in Queenie. I went to visit the man who sold him his home and he offered another cottage to me at only AU$7500. It was a good price hard to refuse since he had it on the market for AU$9000. I could have bought it with the Australian Government's First Home Buyers Grant which is AU$7500. That's a free house! However if your considering buying a small get away in Australia's wettest town think first. The soil in the town is generally contaminated from the earlier days of the mining industry so having that organic vegie patch will be hard work. Most of the time the rain is falling so a dry place indoors is essential and a good stack of fire wood is most necessary for that. Every night you'll have put out the slugs. Inspite of this house prices have gone up cosiderably since 2000 even in Queenstown much of Tasmania for that fact. That place I had my eyes on is now around AU$50,000+ in real market value as people flock to the West Coast of the island state.

With the Abt Wilderness Railway running to Strahan daily and year round Queenstown has alot to offer the first home buyer. Inspite of the tourists passing through Queenstown offers an escape from city life.
