Travel Tips for Ballarat

St Patrick's Catholic Cathedral

by Kate-Me

St Pat's Cathedral stands on the corner of Dawson St Sth and Sturt Street, in the city.
It's one of the few landmarks in the city where you can actually see Palm trees (normally they don't grow in this area, so these are special).

Friendly people...

by Ronald_T

By only one day visiting Ballarat, I just can say that the people are very friendly (as Australians in general), but what counts more; they are very proud on their city. The people are proud that they saved their old buildings. Something what is not to say of the Melbourne centre. I guess that they have the same feelings about their place as the citizens from Brugge in Belgium.

Lake Learmonth 2

by Kate-Me

As I write this just a few weeks after these photos of Lake Learmonth were taken in July 2003 (in the middle of what should have been winter but wasn't - it stayed dry), Lake Learmonth now has water again, and a few swans (mainly just in the middle, and not very deep, but water nevertheless) thanks to 2 weekends of almost solid rain, and some good steady falls during the week, which made a water channel leading to the lake flow again. Not exactly the end of the drought, but the most promising sign of it that we've seen in about 2 years. We had about 99 mm of water in August 2003, which is right on average target, for the 1st time in 14 months.

When you visit Sovereign Hill grab a pan at the stream and learn to pan for gold, there will be someone on hand to show you how its done, then just pick your spot and get panning
The stream has gold dust in it, also several nuggets ! whatever you find you can keep, so you may be lucky

But dont get too carried away, there are lots of things to see and do here, you dont want to spend ALL your time looking for gold.......

or do you ?

by BerniShand

you can actually go inside the gold mine when you visit Sovereign Hill, there are regular tours [ there is an extra charge for this ] you can also see the gold processing machinery in operation, including the large stamper battery and the smelting furnace

gold is harvested from quartz by crushing the rock in the stamper battery, the powder is them washed over copper plates coated with mercury
the gold dust sticks to the mercury and then the amalgam is heated, the mercury evaporates and is condensed to be re-use, this leaves the pure gold behind
