Travel Tips for Ballarat

Camp St redeveloped Arts Precinct

by Kate-Me

Camp Street is one of Ballarat's most historically significant streets. Buildings there include the old Municipal Library, Law Courts and Police Barracks.
The whole street has recently finished its redevelopment into an arts precinct housing the new Arts buildings of the University of Ballarat.

Ultra modern buildings have been incorporated into the streetscape, filling the spaces between and around and even onto the old buildings, creating an interesting blend.
I found it pleasant and relaxing to stroll along the once merely business street and now see young people relaxing on benches or nice lawns near modern art sculptures with the old and the new all around them. Trendy bars and cafes have seen their opportunity to be part of it all and moved into historic buildings opposite the university.
Some other university courses take place at SMB (School Of Mines, originally the old Ballarat Gaol) buildings in Lydiard St Nth, while the bulk of the University remains at Mt Helen, about 8 kms away, in a nice rural setting but a little far out of town for students to visit the city during breaks.

Tipping not required

by Kate-Me

In Australia, it really isn't expected that you tip at restaurants, though it's becoming more common in cities to leave $2 or some small amount at the end of a particularly enjoyable meal.

Australians are generally very friendly, and like to have a joke. Don't worry if you don't understand some of the language - they may be increasing its usage to confuse you, just for fun.
Local customs include gathering together with family and friends and having BBQ's in the summer, or sitting on cafe terraces.
Meals are not generally as long as they are in Europe, and working lunch hours are only 1 hour.

Ballarat

113 km north-west of Melbourne on the Western Highway, was the site of the Eureka stockade and is now home to the Sovereign Hill Goldmining Township, an excellent living museum where visitors can pan for gold and relive the life of the early gold diggers.

Sovereign Hill

by keeweechic

Sovereign Hill is probably the main tourist attraction in Ballarat. This history telling attraction covers more than 60 acres and relives the first 10 years which followed gold discovery in Victoria in 1851. Sovereign Hill is regarded as Australia’s leading outdoor museum.

Opening hours
Sovereign Hill - 10 am to 5.00 pm every day except Christmas Day and until 5.30 during daylight saving.

Early days

by iandsmith

In the fifties and early sixties, the business part of Ballaarat was in lower Main Road. The block between Eureka and Esmond (now York) Streets, was a very hive of trade. In that one block were sixty shops, twelve hotels, and four large well equipped theatres. Shops and hotels did not close till midnight and the roadway was always crowded with laughing noisy people.
All this was about to change..........(next tip)
