Travel Tips for Ballarat

Lots of History...

by Sweetberry1

Ballarat is a Historical place. And very oriented to anything involving history.
So, if you like places that have that have a lot of history, this is a great place to visit.
The architecture, and a lot of activities here, are of a historical nature. I lived here for some 10 years, a small farm on 10 acres, just on the outskirts of the city. A place called Magpie....
I loved the country feel of the place, surrounded by open spaces.

Normandy Nugget 2

by Kate-Me

The Normandy Nugget was found close to the surface by a prospector with a metal detector at Coolgardie in Western Australia, only recently, in 1995!

Some find!

It was on temporary display in 2005 at the Gold Museum.

Stawell

by keeweechic

If travelling from Ballarat to Adelaide on the Western Highway you will pass through Stawell (pronounced Stall). Close to the Grampians, the area became a name when gold was founded by a shepherd in 1853. Mining began and continued until 1920 when the Union Quartz Mining Company chosed. In 1974 however, the mines were opened and are now part of Australian Goldmines. You can go out out to the mines and see the gigantic trucks and excavators in action.

Its not actually a noted tourist attraction but it is part of a petrol station (next door). Certainly got plenty of people to stop and take a photo though.

Soverign Hill

by stevemt

Yes this is a very touristy thing to do, but it is informitive as to how things worked in the gold rish era.

This place has every one of its employees in period costume, doing things the way things were done in that era, (including the punnishments and exectutions)

Sovereign Hill Gold Museum

by Kate-Me

The Gold Museum contains a large and valuable collection of gold nuggets, plus alluvial deposits, and gold items such as ornaments and coins from all over the world....and too much more to mention.
There are also themed exhibitions in gallery rooms featuring historical collections.
The new Gold Museum gift shop has a wonderful array of items which include quality souvenirs, pure gold nuggets, gold plated crystal Australian animals and more, all arrayed beautifully in glass display cabinets and shining as brightly as any jewellery store.
