Romantic and quaint gypsy wagons
I found this place (which I've stayed at twice now) to be very romantic and quaint, and quite unique. I don't know where else in Australia it's possible to stay in a gypsy wagon (ok it's not on wheels but in all other ways, it is modeled on real gypsy wagons, including the interior wood timber and furnishings. (There are 2 wagons on the property, which includes a small but beautiful themed garden)
Smaller and more contact than a cabin, small but functional bathroom and the bed is a high double rather than a queen, but for a couple of days I really didn't find it mattered.
In the kitchen there was a small fridge, toaster, kettle, and portable electric cooktop and frying pan, so everything we could need for our stay.
Unique Quality: Price in the off season or midweek as we chose to stay, was $80 per double per night. In the high season the price pretty much doubles, so how good value it is really does depend on the time of year/week that you're there.
The YHA cottage part of the premises has recently closed.
Directions: About 2 kms from the Visitor Information Centre, across the railway line.
Bed and breakfast
A great, cosy olde worlde atmosphere in a great setting near the river red gum forest and the Murray River a short walk away.
Unique Quality: Has sauna and spa
Directions: Through centre of town, over the railway and the third street on the left.

Fascinating historical town on the Murray River
"River boat town"
Echuca is a fascinating historic town on the Mighty Murray River (so called Mighty because it's over 2500 kms long) situated about 215 kms north of Melbourne. Its population these days is about 11,000.
Along with the larger city of Mildura, several hours further up the river, it is the riverboat/paddlesteamer capital of Australia.
