Wow, the hotel was soo great. Very beautiful and easy to be access. Its located in the one of the main road and opposite of it there is a the tram stop. The staff was really helpful. there give us alot of useful information around the melbourne city. the breakfast was quite ok. the room was very nice and comfortable. but the window was not that ok. because we can just see the other building roof top. but really, staying in this hotel was not hopeless. love to come back here again.

Just stayed at Alto on Bourke for a 4 day Shopping trip with the girls. We had such a fantastic time. Tram stop right on our doorstep to St Kilda and mall. Easy walk to QV markets. Only 80 metre stroll from DFO and stations and the service WOW !!!! Nothing was a problem for the staff there ! It was a pleasure dealing with them from the start. Decor was modern, warm and clean. Was particularly impressed with their courtesy call a few days before our booking to see if everything was on track. Definately will stay with them again. Yes it was a little noisy due to the demolition of building next door but it is the heart of the city and it was expected, besides, we were sooo tired from all the shopping etc that we fell asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow anyway ! Relaxation chairs heaven sent after a full day on our feet !

Great location - clean quite room - friendly staff

We flew in from Adelaide & stayed for 6 nights. The Airport shuttle bus terminus was about 200 metres away from the Alto so it was a handy location if you don't have a car. The room was clean and quiet with the double glazing eliminating any city noises.
The tram stop at the front door was convenient allowing easy access to St Kilda & Port Melbourne for 'out of town' eating. We made extensive use of the Free City tram which allowed us to get to most parts of the city block. The Pub over the road had good atmosphere and meals with other 'takeaway' food places / convenience stores close by.
Things we liked:
.. the coffee machine in the lounge area that was open all hours.
.. the fresh fruit bowl by the entrance for guests.
.. the Alto's Green Policy.
Things we disliked:
.. none
All Hotel staff we encountered were excellent and we had no issues during our stay - our experience was pleasant and relaxing - we would recommend the Alto to friends & will stay there again.
Great Value for Money at the Alto on Bourke

The Alto on Bourke is a great value for money hotel given its central location and quality. We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment that was a good size.
Disliked: I found the bed too springy for my liking, and the pillows too soft. The room where the bed is was also a tad pokey.
Liked: the room is whisper quiet, as they have double glazed windows which is very important given the trams that run down Bourke Street. The restaurant is great value for money, and the food delicious. Highly recommend the apple tart tartin. Yummy!
The staff are friendly and helpful.
I would haven given the hotel an excellent rating if it wasn't for the very springy bed very soft pillows. However, this is a personal preference so if you like a springy bed and soft pillows, it would be a perfect hotel!
As an aside, I would also not recommend the factory outlet down the road. The shops are nothing more than regular outlets with most of the stock normally priced, and only some items reduced (and not to factory outlet savings levels either). I would go to Bridge Road in Richmond, the DFO in Essendon or Morabbin, or the Brand Smart outlet in Nunawading if you are keen for some shopping bargains.

The Alto Hotel on Bourke is conveniently located a short walk from the Southern Cross train station. We took the Skybus from the airport ($26 return, a 20-minute trip) and then walked approximately 100m to the hotel. Check-in was fast and friendly. We stayed 3 nights in a hotel room.
The room was quite small and stylishly appointed. Room furnishings included a bed, small fridge with tea/coffee making facilities, a decent-sized flat screen TV, desk, wardrobe with safe, hairdryer and ironing board. The bathroom was also very small with a shower, toilet and basin. Refillable pump dispensers with shampoo, conditioner, liquid soap and moisturising lotion were in the shower and next tot the basin. The double glazed windows kept the room quiet and the airconditioning kept the room comfortably warm.
Breakfast was included in our room rate. The continental breakfast was sparse, but cooked meals were also available in addition to the buffet. A bowl of apples and a coffee machine were accessible at all hours for guests. The lounge area also has a couple of book shelves with a book swap system.
There is a tram stop across from the hotel and it is an easy walk to the Telstra Dome and into the rest of the city. The hotel has an environmentally friendly stance - there are many eco-friendly features such as energy saving lighting, water saving shower heads, recycling bin, refillable pump dispensers in bathroom, using only free-range eggs in the restaurant/lounge, biodegradable plastic bin liners and more. I would happily stay at this hotel again.
Nice little place in a good location

Rooms are clean, smart, simple and quiet. Having some plates and cutlery is a really useful touch and wireless internet worked really well.
Staff seems very friendly and helpful.
This place reminds me a bit of a small European hotel. Not much in the way of facilities but all the basics well covered including a nice basic breakfast.
About the only negative I can think of is the coffee is not good.
We will definitely stay here again.

Have just returned from a few days stay at the Alto Hotel in Melbourne with my husband and children (aged 7 and 10 years)and what a great find thanks to this website!
We stayed in the 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom apartment. Really well appointed with simple decor but everything you need. The rooms aren't huge but we weren't there to spend a great deal of time in the hotel, not when Melbourne has so much to offer. The staff were just great and very helpful with tips and ideas to help make us and the kids feel welcome. The hotel is close to lots of transport options, trams, trains and walking distance to most CBD areas. Very quiet rooms as well.
We enjoyed the added touches of complimentary reading, relaxation rooms, coffee, hot choc, umbrellas etc. Would recommend the Alto to most types of travellers although if you had toddlers, the internal stairs in the 3 and 2 bedroom apartments might be a safety issue.

We stayed here for 4 nights during the winter, and it was overall not bad for a city centre hotel. We got a 1 bedroom apartment. The lounge area felt a bit more like a hallway, but considering the price we paid (AUS$215 per night) for a city centre hotel I can’t really complain. The hotel seems to be located in the seedier area of Melbourne, with numerous sketchy looking casinos and ‘gentlemen’s clubs’. It did not feel dangerous, though that may be a different story if you wander around late at night, which we didn’t. One thing to note is that there was a 3 person shooting a few years ago on a Monday morning outside a King Street club, a few minutes walk from the hotel. I wasn’t really worried, because shootings generally occur in a lot of major cities and this was a one off incident, hopefully. It was, however, only a 10 minute walk from all the good city centre shopping malls and restaurants. It is also located within 20 minutes walk from all the main sights. Melbourne’s sights tend to be quite spread out so I think most hotels are about 20 minutes walk from the sights. Staff were generally quite helpful, although this does depend on who you get at reception. There is free coffee/hot chocolate/latte etc all day and night that you can get from the machine in the restaurant, which is good. The restaurant felt a bit like a train station waiting room, but this is really not an issue with all the restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Who wants to eat in the hotel anyway? Seven Eleven, Subway, and Hungry Jack’s just a 3 minute walk away. Hotel was equipped with 2 TVs, one in the lounge and one in the living room. The hotel is right next to the tram tracks, which run 24 hours a day, except between midnight and 7 am, and we hear them run past every 3 minutes or so. They are fairly loud.

Great staff! Very comfy single beds. Satisfactory rooms.
Our room's only window faced a brick wall which was disappointing. There was hardly any natural light entering the room. - ask for a room not facing a brick wall.
We paid $160 a night for 4 nights, we would have preferred to pay $30-$40 extra for something nicer (grand hotel across the road or the Punt hill apartments in Little Burke are great). I don't believe the Alto is good value at $160 compared to others the Melbourne CBD has to offer.
Position next to DFO and southern cross station is handy. DFO is overrated though, I found most of the mens brands at DFO to be cheaper in DJ's.
