Great Location

Stayed for 2 days.

Car park bays very very small, would be a problem if you had a large vehicle.

'The Trams', an old Melbourne Tram, is the place where you can get the best Hamburgers and sea food.
The prices are low, the atmosphere is friendly, Thanks to Carlos and Anthony ! Calamari, absolutely great!

Night tour of Old Melbourne Gaol

by plant_girl

You can do a 'performance' tour of the Old Melbourne Gaol at night. See where Ned Kelly was hanged, by candlelight. Spooky!
The freakiest bit was walking past all these dark spaces of cells - kept expecting to see ghosts/have somthing jump out at you!!

Old Melbourne Gaol

You MUST visit the Old Melbourne Gaol. Lots of interesting history here and great value for money. See where Ned Kelly was hanged, and learn heaps about the prisoners who once lived within these horrible cells

Old Melbourne Gaol

by keeweechic

The Old Melbourne Gaol was originally part of a gaol complex that was constructed in 1852-4. It was the first to be built in bluestone in preference to sandstone and had its own perimeter wall. At the time it was a model prison. It served as a prison for the last time in the Second World War to hold soldiers who were AOL.

Melbourne Hotels

I need your opinion about location on the the Melbourne Marriot at Lonsdale Street, the Hilton on the Park at 192 Wellington Parade, and the Tilba Hotel in the citi center.

Which of the three offers a better location?

Andrea

P.S. Thanks for the tram info.

the hilton on the park is just outside the city centre in east melbourne. it is in a beautiful location overlooking both the fitzroy gardens and yarra park which houses the famous melbourne cricket ground. it would be around a fifteen minute walk into the city but only a short tram ride. (tram 48 is at the front door.)

the marriott is in the northern end of the city centre only a short walk to chinatown, shopping, etc and very close to the old melbourne gaol.

i have lived in melbourne all my life and have not heard of the tilba hotel. if it is in the city centre (where i work) it will be walking distance to basically any city attraction including the south bank entertainment precinct.

hope this is a help.

looked up the tilba hotel.
it isn't in fact in the city centre, but in the suburb of south yarra, melbourne's trendiest and home to chapel st. shopping and heaps of nightlife.
its probably a ten minute taxi into the city, 15-20 on the train and forget the tram as you will have to change.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for leaving a msg on my Melbourne page. Personally I would stay at the Marriot. Simply because it's close to my home. No other reason. The Marriot used to be Rockman's Regency. My parents stayed at their service apartment when they visit and I think it was pretty good. Dunno about Marriot though.

Marriott is probably the best located if you want to be in the city area. It's not an incredibly busy part of the city there so it would be quieter than other parts of the city. I've been in and seen the rooms, they're nothing fancy but nice and clean. It's around the theatre district, so if you're planning on seeing a few stage shows you can walk back to your room after, plus there's plenty of restaurants close by. Hilton on the Park is in a prettier location and you can just hop on the tram which takes you straight into the city. Haven't been there but heard good things.
I've never heard of the Tilba either.
