Usually quite a lovely time of year in Melbourne as the first poster has advised. You can get some freak spells (both hot and cold) in Melbourne at any time, and this applies to November too.

That time of the year Melb is probably at its most changable - old expression: 4 seasons in one day. I've known very hot conditions and also very cold and wet conditions. Spring Racing carnival is in full swing early in Nov, so suggest you avoid first week, unless you like horse racing and seeing drunken people.
Can't comment about Canberra.

Due to extreme climatic changes the World is experiencing at the moment, trying to predict the weather can be difficult because of local, on the day variations.
Most places now are seeing weather conditions well outside the norm.

In Melbourne you should have a look at Downtown, Shrine of Remembrance, at Botanical Garden and some parks outside where you can the lovely Rosella-birds.
(but also there are plenty of other nice animals, like my favorit animal Wombat - on the photo) and have a outlook from Arthurs Seat
Sit and dream at University of Melbourne

Sit and dream at University of Melbourne is a tip for rememberance, finally I have been to a few days in University to experience the outlook, and spent few hours surfing the internet there for free and built some tips on the spot. The location where I sit was really beautiful, full of lavender leaves, so comfortable, imaginative, photogenic...
The Footy
by Eggboy
Its a real institution the AFL or footy as we Melbournians know it. Many locals entire existance revolves around the game of Australian Football and in particular their own team. The season runs from March/April through to September, the Grand Final being typically played on the last Saturday in September. Many locals including me, ride the rollercoaster that is their favourite teams success and failure over the 6 months of the season.
The two stadiums hosting Footy in this city are the MCG and the Docklands Stadium, both located close to the City of Melbourneand easily accessible by public transport.
The good news for visitors is that they are large stadiums and aside from games palyed on Big Occassions like Anzac day (April 25th) you can generally buy a "walk up" ticket for around $16 and get a reasonable view of the game. You need not worry about rival supporters waging violent war on each other apart from accosianal friendly verbal stoush, so it is very family friendly.
Packing List
by Jane_T_Jones
As we visit Melbourne in January it is usually quite hot. On our trip three years ago the temperatures got up to 40degrees. Hot!! In these temperatures shorts and singlet tops are best. Last year on our holiday it rained a lot of the time, and it was a lot cooler. I wore my one sweatshirt and trousers a lot of the time.
It pays to be prepared for all weather conditions.
A real life museum!
by JockeyW
In the heart of the Goldfields region is Maldon. Its a couple of hours drive north of Melbourne but well worth the effort. A beautiful town that feels like you've invented that time machine and gone back a hundred years. The buildings are in fantastic condition and the people are so friendly, I wanted to stay there. Check out the gnome shop, the motor museum and the blacksmiths for some authentic old timers. There are some great places to stay too. Calder House is lovely, with really comfortable beds and a great breakfast. Make the effort to go up to the look out tower especially at sunrise or sunset.
