Great Ocean Drive Questions

by vivakid

Hello to all!

I would like to ask for more information on the Great Ocean Road (GOR) Drive which i would be going in June 2010. Thanks for taking the time to ans my question!

1. I'm going in a group of 7 people. Is it better to rent a HUGE car that can seat 7 or would it be better if i rented 2 cars and stick together?

2. I've heard great things about e GOR and really would like to truly appreciate its beauty and not rush things through. I know that is it about 250km long which is OK to be covered in 1 day but i read not really recommended by many. What is the recommanded time (days) to spend on the GOR? I would be heading from Melbourne to Adelaide as my final stop so i would not be doing a round trip.

4. As for accommodation, are there hostel along the way of the GOR that we can rest for the nite?

3. Besides the GOR is there other road trips which i can take along the way?

Thank you so much for yr time in helping me with the qns and have a nice day! =)

Sounds like you need a peoples carrier but thats not gonna be cheap for a budget trip.

Give yourself 2 days on the road and spend some time on the beaches their beautiful .

I did a 3 day trip from Melbourne and back. Last day was in the Grampians.

I recommend a minimum of 3 days for the GOR itself, that is: the stretch between Geelong and Warrnambool/Port Fairy. Loch Ard Gorge alone deserves half a day.
You cannot enjoy the coastal landscape of Port Campbell National Park from the road, you have to stop and get off the car and walk at all those viewpoints to see the cliffs.

The fourth day day for rest of the way if you plan to go straight to Adelaide. More time if you want to do the detour via Grampians, Murray River, Barossa Valley. We did this route in a week and it felt rushed. Take your time, it is worth it.

Port Fairy. now that is bringing back memories of a drunken night there at the local pub.

As it is your 1st time, I would stay 1/2 nights enroute. Remember, it depends on how much walking you are doing, as to how many nights you may want to stay on the route, all this takes time, and there are plenty of places to stop, look and do this. Some nice little towns, just allow enough time to enjoy!
Check out the official website for details on everything you need to know about the Great Ocean road.

Glad you don't wish to rush things. You'll have a good time what ever you do ...There are places to see between Melbourne and the start of the GOR as well. You may wish to see our itinerary in an intro page at:

Please remember that fruit can not be carried across the state borders of Victoria & South Australia.(http://fruitfly.net.au/can-i-carry-fruit-and-veg-from/) happy trails de p.

vivakid, you don't have your profile filled out on your homepage so we don't know what country you are from. If you don't have a driver's licence written in English, you should have an International Drivers Permit. It's issued by your national auto club & basically translates your licence info into 7 or 8 languages.
Look at a previous discussion thread about "No IDP" and getting traffic fines on the Great Ocean Road at:

A trip up to The Grampians would be worthwhile. There's some beautiful walks to do there through the bush (as well as plenty of kangaroos to see!) and isn't too far from the Great Ocean Road

agree aswell.

July will be mid-winter so be careful on the road as if it is slightly wet on the great ocean road it can become very slippery. I would advise spending time in places like Aireys Inlet, Anglesea and Lorne, also Cape Otway is amazing in Winter with it's rolling mountains. Good luck

Islamic peoples

by l_joo

I only occassionally saw Muslims on the streets, not sure whether they are less in population or they seldom wear head scarf, but overall they are not really that less, they looked like Indonesian or perhaps Malay Muslims. Contrary in Malaysia, head scarf women are getting more and more, about 40% in population or more, while queuing at the airport custom checkpoint, I saw peoples in head scarf needed extra scrutiny in another form-filling process.

grab a friend (or ANY friend, if you want) and chill out at ST KILDA'S! They have many lovely cafes and restaurants here....

At Christmas time, this whole area becomes magically lighted up with dancing lights! (See pic below).

Compact Umbrella or Poncho a must

by westrella

Leave space in your luggage - you will undoubtably buy something to take home. A compact umbrella or poncho that easily fits in your handbags or backpack is ideal. You will not be using it all the time so having to hand carry it will be a nuisance, but undoubtably you will encounter some rain during your stay and quite frequently, there will be odd 5 minute showers. Melbourne has plenty of all night chemists and supermarkets. Plenty of net cafes to upload your photos to some storage website! A Cheap Eats book is published each year and is available at tourist shops and newsagents.

Wineries in the Yarra Valley

by Lady_Godiva

The Yarra Valley is located just over an hour's drive east of Melbourne. It is beautiful scenic country housing plenty of wineries, restaurants with fabulous views and the famous Healesville Sanctuary. There are companies which pick you up in Melbourne in the mornings and take you on winery tours to the Yarra Valley (usually to the larger ones - Yering Station, Rochford, Domain Chandon...) Otherwise, just hire a car and do it yourself.

For more specific details of some wineries and restaurants, please see my separate tips.
