Great hotel

Perfect location! Located right on Flinders Street overlooking the Yarra River, only a short walk to Federation Square, Rialto Tower, the casino, etc. You're really in the heart of it all and within walking distance of many of the more popular sights. To make this even better, the hotel itself is wonderfully accomodating. Comfortable rooms, friendly staff - there's not much you could ask for in a hotel that this one doesn't provide. The only thing I question is the shower stall; as an American staying in her first Aussie hotel, I was wondering if the half-door in place of the curtain was an Australian standard. But as this is the only hotel I stayed at throughout my stay in this wonderful country without the typical curtain, I guess its unique to Clarion Suites?

More about Clarion Suites Gateway

Great location

by TripAdvisor Member MillieAustralia

This hotel is in a great loation, within walking distance of all the sights and very close to the shops! We got a great deal on a 3 bed apartment, which was on the 11th floor, with a great view of the river. The staff were very helpful and friendly and service was good. the apartment was spacious although the lay out was awkward and bedtime arrangements would have been difficult if our children were younger. The apartment was a little old and tired and at first it smelled very badly but the staff sorted this problem out immedietly. We went for a walk and on our return - 2 hours later it was resolved. All in all we thought this was great value for money! Melbourne is a fantastic place to visit, use the free tram to get around and make sure you visit the Old Gaol. But we found the trip to the skydeck in Eureka Tower to be very expensive and not very interesting!

Great Hotel, Great Service, Great Staff

by TripAdvisor Member mail2bazza

Hi.
I have stayed at this hotel many, many times (possibly as much as 100 nights) over the last 2 to 3 years, mostly on business, but on occasions with my wife for leisure as well.
I cannot speak more highly of this hotel, the staff and particularly the management.
We have stayed at many hotels around the world and have a wide choice of options in Melbourne, but continue to stick with the Gateway because they will always go the extra mile for a guest and you cannot beat the great location.
I would recommend the 1 bedroom river view suite for a couple, the rooms are like an appartment with a full kitchen and a great outlook over the river and Crown complex.

Happy Birthday

by TripAdvisor Member KathyOMelbourne

When the hotel rang to confirm our booking, I mentioned the reason for our trip into town (30klms) was to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday, with a visit to the Eureka Tower Skydeck and Crown Casino.
On our arrival as soon as the staff heard our surname my wife was greeted with a "Happy Birthday"
What an unexpected start to our stay? When we arrived in our room there were 2 wine glasses and napkin on the table with a note underneath. This note said Happy Birthday and please enjoy the bottle of wine in the fridge, with our compliments.
The room which overlooked the railway and then the Yarra River to the Casino was completely noiseless. It felt funny watching the trains and traffic and not hearing anything.
It really made for a Happy Birthday.

Fantastic Location

by TripAdvisor Member Gr00ver

I have used the Clarion Gateway for over 70 work stay visits in Melbourne over the last few years.
The features of this hotel for me are
Fantastic Location near the River, CBD and Casino precinct
Great views over the river and Mountains
Spacious rooms with full ammentities including Balconies.
Great Restaurant with an outdoor area for a social chat
The customer service for the hotel is magnificent, they are very obliging. It is very rare today where you stay at a hotel irregularly and the staff remember you by name when you next visit.
The same service has been experienced whilst staying on social visits with the family.
Whilst this service continues I will continue to use and recomend this hotel.

Another good stay

by TripAdvisor Member Gazman17

We stayed at this hotel again as we liked it the last time and we were delighted with every aspect again. The location is close to everything we wanted to do and the service was friendly yet proffesional.
Unfortunately when we booked and asked for a double room with a view, we were told that only a standard room was available which did not have a view over the Yarra.
To our surprise, we were given a King bedded room with partial city views, which was a good alternative to the Yarra view, but not quiet as good......, but the bed was huge and very comfortable.
The hotel looks good and was very well maintained, but we were told that the foyer and restaurant are due for upgrading soon....looking forward to it.
We didn't eat in the restaurant because we like wandering along Southbank and found a restaurant there.........a lot to choose from.., but we did do the breakfast buffet and enjoyed a pretty good cappucino.
The trams which are all over Melbourne and close to the hotel are fantastic and we saw some sights and did some shopping(anniversary coming up).
Once again very enjoyable stay and will hopefully return soon.

A place of serenity to enjoy a spectacular city!

by TripAdvisor Member LissL

The service:
- pre booking was wonderful. Friendly, prompt, and patient.
- during stay, equally impressive

The accomodation:
In a word AMAZING. How's the serenity, sitting in a beautiful appartment, complete floor to roof glass windows, drinking and eating fab food, while watching the activities all along the Yarra (MCG, Flinders Street, Crown etc.).

The location:
Step out and smooze through some of Melbourne's best shopping in beautiful buildings (Ie the Block Arcade)

Loved it!

Exceeded expectations

by TripAdvisor Member Phoebe43

Myself and husband spent 4 nights at the Clarion and were more than satisfied with it. The price was reasonable, the room was comfortable, clean and very well appointed. Breakfast was also "scrumptious" as advertised. We had a fantastic view across the Yarra River to the Crown Casino, and it was only a short walk walk to the main shopping area and most attractions. Another bonus was the free tourist tram which stopped nearby.
The staff were friendly and helpful, too. We'll stay there again!

Flawless apartment hotel

by TripAdvisor Member jcmjcm

We stayed in a 1-bedroom apartment over Easter 08.

SERVICE
Very friendly; room wasn't available for check-in at 11am yet, but they called us at 1pm to tell us that it was available then and already moved our luggage upstairs.
They're happy to arrange Starbus transfer from the airport if given sufficient notice (better than Skybus)

ROOM
Very clean and as presented on the website. Spacious, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable bed, two TVs. Most rooms seem to have recently been refurbished.

LOCATION
Near the Yarra river and Flinders street; very central

OTHER COOL STUFF
The hotel provides access to a gym and has a pool on the 5th floor.

STRENGTHS
Value, value, value. It's ok that there are 10 luxury hotels ranked above this one in Melbourne, but this is certainly one of the best ones when it comes to having a 1 bedroom + 1 living room + 1 kitchen apartments under $200/night.

WEAKNESSES
Salt shaker was missing and the elevator isn't particularly fast. Yep, that's it.

Excellent Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member bobhat

My wife and I visited Melbourne for a long weekend to attend 2 shows. We selected the Clarion Gateway through the Lastminute. com website. We were absolutely delighted with our selection.

We found the Hotel to be in the middle of Melbourne CBD and easy walking distance to every location we wanted to go to.

The service from the moment we entered the foyer was exceptional. The staff were extremely courteous, professional and very helpful. Their information and guidance was magnificent for us.

We were upgraded in our rooms without question, which was an immediate bonus for us.

We are visiting Melbourne again and the Clarion will be the only Hotel we will be interested in staying in. I will also be recommending the Hotel to my company and other travelling collegues.
