Day trip suggestion (Philip Island plus .....)

by rhino1975

Hi, am planning my itinerary for melbourne trip in a fortnight (family of 5). Just a quick q. Have a full day in which am planning to visit Philip Island for the penguins. Was advised to go there in late afternoon so i can catch it during sunset. That leaves the entire morning till noon free ( i believe its around 90 min drive from Melbourne to PP)

Can anyone recommend any suitable outskirts journey that i can cover on the same day together with Phillip Island (something like a combo day trip). Not that particular about places as long as doable with PP, although scenic/unique places are a plus. Only have one full day to cover outside Melbourne in addition to few days on the GOR track.

Thanks

Hello there.
We went to Philip Island a couple of years ago. Do not think for a moment, that the only thing to see there, are Penguins. As you enter Philip Island from over the bridge, you will find, on your right, an infomation centre. Spend the first 15 minutes or so, looking through the pamphlets. There is a full day of exploring and doing stuff around the area. One example, is to check out "The Nobby's". Another is the village of "Sorrento". In fact you will run out of time to see everything. When we go back, there is still a lot for us to see.
I hope this helps.
Russ.

You could try stealing a few ideas from the tour companies who go down to the Penguin Parade (google penguin parade and you'll get plenty of options). For example, one of them stops at Royal Australia Gardens in Cranbourne on the way out. There's also a couple of animal parks out that way too I think (Koala Conservation Centre, etc).

As Oldruss already said, there is plenty to do on Philip Island, including a Koala Sanctuary, cliffs, short walks, etc. On the way down we stopped in the Dandenongs.

Healesville Sanctuary which was suggested is wonderful, and I would recommend it to everyone who visits Melbourne - but it is totally out of the way (Northeast in the Yarra Valley).

Bookmark. Will be in Melb in late Nov. I'll have a few free days to explore the environs.

I agree with posters encouraging you spend day on Philip Island (Healesville is way off the route), Drive from Melbourne is 90 mins-2 hours and is HIghway is pretty boring, although the quickest way there.

Penguin Parade is your goal, but Amaze'N'Things, Koala Sanctuary, possibly Wildlife Coast Cruise (get up close and personal to the seals on - Seal Rock), chocolate factory, Churchill Island (heritage farm and homestead), Grumpy's Waterslide, as well as the spectacular coastline adjoining the Penguin Parade location will give you heaps of things to do in your day, all of which will appeal to family of all ages. Remember Phillip Island is a magnet for Melbourne families for one/two week holidays - so there has to be plenty to do to keep them occupied (but you're OK in terms of it not being school holidays!). And there's also the sheltered beaches on the north of the island.
And it isn't a little island - all will require driving from one place to another.

But enjoy

Travel Tips for Melbourne

Melbourne's casino is one of...

by al3xwong

Melbourne's casino is one of the best in the world, and i've been to a few. hehe. Also the nightlife here is fabulous. A must go to is the F1 Grand Prix in March. Best time to visit Melbourne is from December to April, summertime. Why? Party party paaaarrty. Fantastic relaxing atmosphere. Loads of parks and very spacious, but yet modern enough to shop for everything you could ever want and more.

Victorian Arts Centre

by Kate-Me

Until Southbank and Crown Casino and the Rialto Tower came along in recent years, the Victorian Arts Centre was an even more focal point of Melbourne than it is now, featuring on all the calendars, etc of the city. The Arts Centre lights up really well at night and can be seen for quite some distance.

Federation Square

by l_joo

I was brought here by friends who study at Melbourne University, to see the historical paintings inside this non-common-look building. Our society view is that, if the building looked less common, that must be something not common and so want to see. I went in to see some historical paintings, understanding some history of history of Melbourne and then I took some photos, typical tourists of modern days.

Packing List

by ombre

Melbourne is not easy place to say what to bring the weather can be all over the shop like a mad woman on after christmas shopping spree.what time of year you arrive would change many things on your packing list. medical wise australia's health service is very good at you can obtain most things you would ever need for minor problems .though like traveling to any place if your not local make sure your travel insurence is well covered like any capital city you would be stupid not to bring a good camera as there are many things worth wanting to keep visually long after the trip is over. melbourne people love the beach and we have some area's where there is plenty of sand and for the most part our beaches are clean but unlike sydney victoria's beast surf beaches are more then an hour away at least. this pic is of cocogal and my friend newyork_gal taken with the yarra river and flinders street station in the background.
on the left hand side is the area known as south bank full of shops, bars and restaurants.
and still on that side of the road is the crown casino.

in the moods for some wine

by terps94

Yering station (38 Melba hwy).

In here is the site of Yarra's 1st vineyard. Yering's tasting area has an art gallery and they also have two awesome restaurant one is located in Chateau Yering and the other one is called matt's bar which is a glass complex overlooking the valley. Their wine ranges from $ 15.50 - 58. for dessert wine I recommend the late harves pinot gris and also their rieslings is quite good too.

Open M-F 10am-5pm Sat - Sun 10 am - 6 pm
restaurant M-F 12-3pm, Sat-sun 12-4 pm
