Re: koala

Try the Healseville Sanctuary. DO NOT in any circumstance try to handle a koala that isnt in a zoo or sanctuary and with a park attendant. Although they are a very docile animal they have claws that can do a heap of harm and as a former government minister said they like to urinate. A male looking for a mate can be a formidable sight.
If you want to see them in the "wild" then try Philip Island.

Are you going to South Australia, you can cuddle Koalas there. It has been banned in some states.

Re: koala

I'm pretty sure holding a koala is not an option in Victoria - SA or Qld still allow it.
Check with the following: http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au or www.visitphillipisland.com they will be able to tell you if you can hold them or not.

You cannot hold a koala at the Healesville Sanctuary. There are a few in a kind of open enclosure and you can look down to them, and others are in the hospital where you can see them through glass, or the recovering ones behind bars.

I think you cannot cuddle a koala at the Koala Conservation Centre on Philip Island, only watch them close-up from boardwalks.

But I think it is possible at the Ballarat Wildlife Park. I have not been there myself but check here for information:

BTW If you happen to go to Sydney you can get close to a koala at Taronga Zoo and Featherdale Wildlife Park. But real cuddling is not possible at the zoo anymore, only standing right beside them for a photo.

I know this is proberly too late for the original poster but it may be helpful for others who want the answer to this question. At the, Australia Zoo you can hold a real koala if you pay to get your photo taken - i think it was AUD$15, you don't get too hold it for long but it is a great experience! They smell bad though!!

Re: koala

Well, but Australia Zoo is not really near Melbourne...

Re: koala

Yeah i know but for alot of the people that go to OZ they really want to see/hold koalas so now they know where they can do it if its one of there 'must do's' in OZ.

Travel Tips for Melbourne

Melbourne Skyline

by Kate-Me

From a distance, Melbourne city looks like it is all skyscrapers and reflective glass buildings, but closer inspection gives a very nice surprise, as there are many lovely stone and other impressive buildings in between the more modern, which are just waiting to be discovered and admired.

The burke street mall in...

by ombre

The burke street mall in melbourne is really a opening to 2 of the 3 major department stores .david jones slighty more upmarket and Myers which is probably the the best range department store in victoria.
The mall itself is often home to buskers and the G.P.O is at the bottom of burke st,on the myer side of the street.

Tipping

by grkboiler

Tipping isn't really expected anywhere in Australia. If you do tip, it will most likely be for great service in a nice restaurant. 10-15% is good.

If you come from a society that tips 15-20% like mine, it is not easy to get used to not tipping someone. If you decide a tip is deserved, just go with your instinct about how the service was or the type of place you are at.

All sports

by maryamy

With the MCG, the tennis courts and the formula one circuit, there is always something going on sporting wise in this city.
You can always try your hand at golf just outside the city or take a boat out for sailing, go swimming with dolphins or any other watersports you can think of. Surfshire is only a short drive out to the west... Swimming and watersports gear must be a must?!

Looking up gives a different perspective 1

by SPW

Melbourne is a city which grew rapidly with the gold rushes of the 1850s and was extremely prosperous in the 1880s. Much of the architecture reflects this time but this has been overshadowed in recent years by modern sky scrapers, mainly office blocks. The proportion of the city has changed and it is often necessary to look up for glimpses of the past.
This weather vane is a good example of what might be found. It may be seen at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Little Collins Street.
