by vpas

I visited the Island a few weeks ago and the penguins were plentful, several hundred coming ashore in varying size groups. Tip - go for 'penguin plus' its less crowded and you get close up and personal as they come by only a few feet away. No photgraphs though. If you are going from Melboure, several operators will organise a tour. I recommend AAAT Kings who have an office in Swanston Street, from where the trip leaves, right opposite the Swanston Hotel. The trip is in an air-conditioned coach, with facilities, and you get the benefit of an informative guide to point out places of interest on the way. I unfortunately cant remember the cost but it must have been reasonable for me to do it !!
Hope this has been of some help
Roger

Hi Vpas,

This time of the year is peak breeding season for the penguins, so you'll see lots of them. They come in just after sunset (about 8.15pm), so you won't get back to Melbourne until about 11pm - makes for a long day.

Saw you're interested in historical things here's a bit of a list, but with only 2 days you won't get to see too much:
Old Melbourne Gaol (jail) where Ned Kelly was hung in 1880.
Royal Exhibition Buildings - world heritage listed
Royal Botanical Gardens - one of the 10 best gardens in the world
City Circle Tram - free and you go on historic trams. Takes about an hour to do the lap of the city and suggest you could spend most of the day getting on and off and seeing the sights.

One that I like is the Golden Mile Heritage Trail - http://www.visitvictoria.com/displayobject.cfm/objectid.000AB6E4-BA2C-1A5F-88CD80C476A90318/

That with the penguins will keep you busy for the 2 days. And BTW you can see the penguins at St Kilda pier for free without having to spend nearly 2 hours each way getting to/from Philip Island.

Enjoy our city

Travel Tips for Melbourne

On the beach

by maria-belgrade

Very unusual way to express your creativity, don’t you think?
Young people make those sand sculptures on the beach in order to make some money, so if you see this give them some change. They will appreciate it and you’ll enjoy their special art :)

by Audrey118

Buy some dessert wine. and chill them really cold, and sip slowly after a meal.

My favourtie from Melbourne is the Noble One, 1996 - excellent taste - very sweet and
sticky taste. Keep for several years - it improves so much.

Meat Pies

by grkboiler

Meat pies are very popular at sporting events, or for a quick snack from a 7-11. If you have a pie and you like it, you will want one every day. This is definitely one of the things I miss most about Melbourne and Australia. I loved sitting at the MCG and watching footy while having a pie.

Pies usually come wrapped individually in plastic. If you get a meat pie at a game, you can eat it plain or with tomato sauce (ketchup).

In Australia, by the way, it is to-MAH-toe, not to-MAY-toe.

Back to the pies...It may sound simple and you might wonder why I put this tip here, but I have heard a few tourists ask "how do you eat this thing?".

My Aussie friend would show them to eat a pie like this: Open up the plastic and add tomato sauce with every bite. Another way is to take the pie out of the package, smother the tomato sauce on top and eat it. No utensils necessary, just your hands. Just be careful - the filling can burn your mouth.

Australian Grand Prix

by ChadSteve1975

Melbourne is the venue of the Australian Grand Prix. The first of the Formula Ine Circuit events.

Melbourne gets race fever as result.

In the week before the race the city prepares with displays in federation square for the enthausist that wants to see the machines up close. Go in race made. Watch for crowds. And be prepared to face transport rage.

kennett river

by willy_wonka

kennett river is a beautiful quaint little seaside town, that backs onto some state forest. this is where we saw a few koalas. a beautiful little cafe nearby set against the river mouth and sea provided a nice little break on the road trip.
