The stay at the Grand was very pleasant. It is a bit different to the major chain hotels. The building was used by the Railway Deparrtment before restored as a hotel and apartments. It is very close to the Melbourne Convention Centre, about a 5 minutes walk.
Service was always friendly and good. I did find the breakfast a bit uninteresting and monotonous.
Rooms are on two levels (very much like a loft apartment), with a lounge and kitchen downstairs, and the bedroom and bathroom upstairs. There are dvd palyer, mini hi-fi, plasmascreen tv's and fully equiped kitchen.
Unique Quality: Location, interior and history
We stayed here for 1 night. it really is a grand old style hotel. I was very comfortable and spacious. There was a full kitchen in the room with oven and dish washer. I read several reviews saying it had the most comfortable beds people had ever slept in - they were right!!! I was worried that it would be noisy but the rooms have double glazing so the noise didn't bother me at all.
Directions: A block south of Southern Cross station
The Grand hotel is 'grand' and would have what most would call 'historic charm'. If it's not already heritage listed it will be sometime soon. The hotel is well maintained in keeping with the period.
There are a variety of rooms: regular hotel rooms, studio suites and loft suites.
We stayed in a two bedroom loft suite. 16 foot ceilings, full equipped kitchen (including dishwasher and microwave), CD player etc.
The bedrooms were a little small as if was in a mezzanine, but the down stairs kitchen/living area was more than generous.
Unique Quality: Great pool and gym area. The pool has sliding doors which open to a courtyard. It also has a phone there so you can get food sent down. This would be awesome in summer.
The location is also great. It is five minutes walk from the Casino and Aquarium and very close to telstra Stadium. The Casino/ Southbank area is great for dining etc.
This hotel has some old world charm with very modern facilities. It is a the edge of the CBD and a short stroll gets you into the heart of Melbourne, to the Docklands and the football stadium as well as to the casino. Our room had a huge living area with mezzanine bedroom. Very friendly staff. I am looking forward to staying there again.
Unique Quality: It is a refurburshed railway building. the characteristics of this have been kept including an old lift but it lacks nothing in comfort, service or amenities.
Directions: Edge of CBD
We stayed here for a weekend and found it was close to everything we needed. We could walk to town, to the casino, convention centre and even the stadium if we needed to. Staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms were fantastic for size, even the so-called studio! The tram stops were close by and although we were next to the railway station, the noise was not enough to cause distraction.
Restaurant was awesome in their presentation of food and although higher price range, I think you get what you paid for.
We will definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.
Unique Quality: This is the old railway station and has hug rooms and really long corridors.
