GOR - transportation

by cat_iring

Hi guys,

I would like to ask for help on transportation in going to the Great Ocean Road.
Aside from the self-drive and joining tours, is there a way to go on the GOR? I will be traveling with my boyfriend and unfortunately, we both don't have licenses to drive in Australia. Is there like a bus or something that can transport us from Melbourne to Lorne or Apollo Bay?

Many thanks in advance for the help.

This should help you

http://www.mcharrys.com.au/McHApollo.htm

I haven't used Mcharry's buses for a long time but when I did they were excellent and they still have a good reputation. They only operate from Geelong so you would take a train from Melbourne (Southern Cross Station) to Geelong Station and the bus will leave from there. The buses are co-ordinated with the train arrivals.
Can get one ticket covering both Melbourne to Geelong and Geelong to Apollo Bay (costs $20.40) or Lorne (costs $16.60) from V/Line. Some buses only go to Lorne but any of the McHarry's buses going to Apollo bay will go through Lorne.

You could travel with V Line.

The following website shows information for Warrnambool to Melbourne (via Apollo Bay).

http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/route/view/1749

It seems to be that you will need to get a train from Southern Cross Station (Melbourne City) to Geelong Station, and then swap over to a coach.

It looks to be approx a 3 - 4 hour trip.

The following timetable may be a bit easier to read:

http://tt.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/tt/TTB/VIC_TEST__000045bd_AS.pdf

I would contact Metlink to check accuracy of the timetables and ensure they are up to date.

Hope this helps :)

The McHarry's timetable is more likely to be up to date -they provide the actual buses.

There's a company called Go West which do a good day tour. Have done it, and really enjoyed it.

Travel Tips for Melbourne

Rent a car

by dracko

While you're in Melbourne, do consider renting a car. There's lots to explore outside the city. You can drive around Port Phillip bay and visit the picturesque little towns, like Portsea or Queenscliff. Or take a hop down to Torquay - the surfing capital of the world and explore it at your leisure. But the main reason you will want to drive is to get a chance to explore the Great Ocean Road properly. Driving this coastal road heading West from Torquay is an experience that you should not take in from a seat on a tour coach. You
have to explore it on your own - making stops when you want to, and staying in any one place for however long you want to. Besides, if you were on a coach, you'd likely never get a chance to meet this little guy going about his business in the brush just off the side of the road!

by Koleno

Plan enough time to visit the many sites that Melbourne and the Melbourne area have to offer. In Melbourne, see the Botanical Gardens and stroll past the many beautiful buildings that make Melbourne a great city. Melbourne also offers great day trips around an hours drive outside of Melbourne. The Healesville Sanctuary and Phillips Island were great day trips from Melbourne. Phillips Island and the Fairy Penguin's. This is one of our greatest memories of any of our vacations.

Litterings

by l_joo

Litterings is a habit but I dare say this habit is much weaker than my country, sorry Melbourners, we won, you are a loser. I snapped this picture at a corner of a residential + commercial district nearby University of Melbourne, under the trees, litterings can be seen, and that's about it, the rest of the city appeared clean and tidy. Over here, we have litterings about 100 times more and were hidden and exposed in river, roadside, backstreet, drain, wasteland and anywhere possible.

Jacket/Jumper Required!

by gezbelle

When coming to Melbourne, always make sure you bring a jacket or jumper, just in case. Even in the summer months.

The weather in Melbourne has a tendency to change frequently. It may be hot, sunny, clear blue skies one minute. But before you know it, there could be rain, wind, and clouds.

But it probably occurs less in summer.

However, Melbourne is renowned for the possibility of 4 seasons in one day.

Mount Buller

by nesh50

If you are looking foward to snow in Melbourne, rent a car in Melbourne (see my transportation tips for more details) and head towards Mount Buller. It is aout 4 hours drive from Melbourne city. But it only snows during the month of June/July (Av. temperature:-2 degrees celcius). Up at the village, there are many snow activities like snowboarding, skiing, sliding etc. Do becareful when you are driving at the top of the mountain as the roads are narow and may be slippery when icy.
