It has great links to everything going on in Melbourne. Melbourne seems to be THE place to be if you are hip and happening. My favourite place is a bar called the 'Gin Palace'. It is in the heart of Melbourne, is in a little alleyway and VERY hard to find - guess that's why only the trendy 'regulars' are there sipping the expensive gin and smoking their imported cigarettes. It's good to go there and pretend you are part of the crowd...
City Circle Tram

Take a free tour around the city on the City Circle Tram. Just wait at any of the specially marked tram stops on Flinders, Spencer, La Trobe or Spring Street. Daily every 20 minutes (sometimes it can be longer than that especially on weekends, so be patient!).

Flinders Street Station is the main terminal for Melbourne's vast network of suburban rail services, daily transporting the heavy influx of commuters to and from the city. Opened in 1854, it is the oldest railway station in Australia. Originally the headquarters of the pioneering Hobson's Bay Railway Company, the station was taken over by the Victorian Government in 1878, and the present building were completed in 1910, since which time they have been one of Melbourne's best known landmark.

It is very important that all visitors to Melbourne know what Aussie Rules Football is and what team they follow. If you need to research look at www.afl.com.au. A quick tip, don't pick Collingwood as it tends to envoke hostiltiy among the natives. You can however refer to Eddy McGuire in every conversation as most natives will know this bloke.
PS Bloke means man and Shelia means woman.
