Budget Lodging Choices 1

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on April 30, 2008

The Unilodge Group caters mainly to Students. They provide long term housing at affordable rates but they also provide hotel style accommodation for shorter stays.

The UniLodge on Swanston apartments are opposite the RMIT campus and next door to Melbourne Central. Choices of apartments include studio, one, two, and three bedroom apartments. All apartments have separate areas for studying, relaxing, sleeping and cooking.

Facilities include 24 hour on-site management and security, internet access from all rooms, a fully equipped business centre and student common room with a television and couches, as well as games facilities, snack food vending machines and a table tennis table. There is also a coin-operated laundry facility. ATM banking facilities and banking institutions are close walking distance and there is direct access to all major public transportation including trains, trams and buses.

I stayed here for a night and I had a good room with a fantastic view of the city. The room was clean, orderly and bright, though one shouldn't be expecting luxuries. Hotel rooms include a mini-bar and complimentary coffee and tea.

Unique Quality: The apartment was comfortable and surprisingly, devoid of dust.

The biggest plus point has to be the location. Very convenient.

Directions: Next to Melbourne Central Train Station, and opposite RMIT and the State Library.

Horror cheapie

Terrible (1.0 of 5.0 stars)

This is a budget accomodation, and Unilodge is primarily student accomodation, but they have a few rooms that they let out as hotel accom. Despite being budget, we were not prepared for the absolute horrible presentation of this accom. First, the carpet was filthy - coated in stains all over and sticky in patches. The folder containing the hotel information was assembled from a variety of sources and I'm sure a student could have done them a favour and retyped the whole lot to make it neat and uniform. There is no air con and room attendence is only once a week. If you are going to stay there longer than a couple days, you need to think about whether you want to use the same towel that long. One side of the hotel is next to the air conditioning system of the next building which means that with your windows open, you are left to deal with the 24 hour roar of it. There is broadband in room for $5/hr. Also kettle and tea/coffee in room. Ironing facilities, tv, radio, kitchenette.

Unique Quality: Convenience. It is located in CBD opposite the library.

Directions: Opposite the city library
