More about Mantra on Russell

Great Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member EileenPerthWA

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in March and loved it. We opted for the one bedroom suite, as my husband is an early riser and I like to sleep in. He could then get up and make himself a cup of coffee and watch TV without waking me, which is impossible in a normal hotel room. It was very spacious, clean and well appointed, with hot plate, oven, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine and dryer also included.
We stayed on the 10th floor overlooking Russell St and didn't really have any noise problems.
It is the perfect location, close to Chinatown and lots of other restaurants. It is also diagonally opposite the QV centre which has Safeway supermarket (which is open 7am until midnight seven days a week) and Big W and it also has a great food court, with lots of variety.
We used our Entertainment book and received 50 percent off the rack rate which brought the price down to about $176 Aus an night which is very reasonable for a great one bedroom suite in a large city such as Melbourne. However, the discount is not always available if there are any major events on at the time.
Al in all, we had a great stay at the Saville on Russell and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Loved it!

by TripAdvisor Member Santorina

My husband and I stayed in a 2 bedroom suite together with our 4yo and my sister on a hot weekend in February - Chinese New Year weekend.

I do all the travel and accommodation for the company I work for so know quite a few hotels and always research.

We were pleasantly surprised and right from check-in, we were thrilled with nearly every aspect of our stay, from the spacicous AND clean rooms right down to the wonderful and friendly service from all staff we encountered.

Im sure we were on the 8th floor and didnt have a problem with noise, esp with the Chinese New Year celebrations. Sure at times it was noisy if you opened the windows but if our daughter could sleep thru then anyone could.

Weekend was very hot and the air conditioning was fantastic.

Saville is central to everything in the city, you are right in Chinatown, shops, transport, the works.

Would go back without doubt!

Spacious Apartments

by TripAdvisor Member lindso

The Saville Apartments are as spacious as we have come to expect from this group. Our single bedroom apartment was extremely roomy with a large balcony running the width of the room. The equipment was brand new and spotless and the condition of the furnishings first class. My only criticism is that, given the size of the balcony, there was no balcony furniture provided, so that if you wanted to sit outside you had to lift out the chairs from the room furniture, with the risk of them becoming damaged from repeated movement. Some inexpensive plastic chairs and a table would have improved things enormously. The restaurant was quite good, reasonably priced, offering a standard menu with specials of the day. The apartments are located on a busy city street,so do not expect any spectacular views and about 10 -15 minutes walk from Flinders Street Station and Constitution Square. If you are thinking of going to the Crown Casino in the evening, a taxi is a must and costs about $10. We would certainly use this accommodation again.

Great value & good location

by TripAdvisor Member TheQueenslander

After securing a good rate using the Entertainment card compared with Wotif, we booked two one-bedroom suites for our family. They handled check-in extremely well and knowing we needed to rush to a dinner engagement, front desk kindly took our bags to the rooms for us.

Rooms are spacious and nicely appointed, with fully functional kitchen and laundry facilities. Not spectacular views from the 11th floor, but great pool & spa, with a fair cardio gym. The aim was easy access to the city's shopping and food - we walked through the centre of town with ease, but it is a little further if you're aiming for Flinders St station or Federation Sq.

Chinatown is next door and the late-night eateries around the area very nicely satiated the after party munchies.

No problems with this facility for it's price point. But what's with the staff nametags listing their town of birth?? Anyway, this place has my recommendation.

Winter Warmer Special!

by TripAdvisor Member mushy_sushi

We stayed here during their Winter Warmer Special and it was a very good deal! For $150 a night, my sister and I stayed in a studio apartment including breaky and we were also given hot chocolate and cookies for supper! Apartment was spacious and with all the amenities and convenience u could ask for. Concierge and reception/room service were very nice to deal with although some could smile a bit more. Nevertheless it was efficient service so not much to complain there.

The only thing we werent so happy about was the terrible view we had. We stayed on the 6th floor but our window overlooked the roof of the adjacent building and the carpark across the street. Not a pretty site but as it was winter and we wouldnt spend much time street gazing from our hotel room at night - it wasnt a big problem. The food there isnt the best but when you're hungry late at night you can't be fussy either.

Apart from that location was excellent! And we enjoyed our stay overall!

$27 a day internet access!

by TripAdvisor Member Kneidale

If you don't mind cleaning ladies coming in and doing absolutely nothing except changing towels every day; if you don't mind that your sheets are changed once a week; if you don't mind to pay $175 a day and have your apartment NOT CLEANED EVEN ONCE IN 12 DAYS; if you don't mind carrying your own luggage cause noboody even heard the term bellboy or concierge; if you don't mind PAYING $27 A DAY FOR INTERNET ACESS or 400 a month, you will enjoy Saville.
the cleaning situation was so bad that our neighbours wrote on the "please clean my room" sign in huge black letters: "CLEAN THE TIOLET!!!"

Fantastic Apartments

by TripAdvisor Member BrissleJock

We spent 4 nights at Saville on Russell and could not fault it!

We had a one bed suite that was large and spacious. Decor was in good condition and stylish. The appartment also benefited from a large balcony.

Hotel has a nice pool and small gym.

Staff were efficient and friendly at both check in and check out.

if you are looking for something central (10 mins walk to Findlers Station) with more space than a hotel room you could not do any better.

Hotel is also on the edge of chinatown- so if you like chinese you can eat well- we did!

Saville on Russell - Superb serviced self catering accommodation

by TripAdvisor Member brucehannay

A lifetime ambition was always been to go to the Boxing Day Test Match at the MCG. For closeness to the ground this was ideal. It is also pretty much in the centre of the city, so all amenities - shops, train stations, etc are within easy walking distance or a short taxi ride away.

As '06 was our Silver Wedding year, the trip to Australia was 'planned' well in advance. What I didn't realise was England were the visitors to MCG in 2006. Great - I hear you all say - what's the problem ?

2 things:
1) I'm Scottish ;-)
2) You English only had to go and win the Ashes in the series before which made this test series probably the most anticipated in history !!

Anyhow - turned out not to be a problem. With the help of "Aussie" relatives secured tickets for 1st 2 days.

Pity about the the Xmas weather though. Coldest Xmas day on record !!!!!!!!!! 14C apparently with snow on the outlyimg hills. Boxing Day wasn't much better :-(

Anyway the plus side was the accommodation. Fantastic 1 bedroomed flat with full kitchen facilities, washer dryer, tv (in main room and bedroom) and stereo cd/radio. With woolworths/safeway in the mall directly across the road, very easy to get food. Plenty restaurants in and around the hotel as well so didn't go hungry.

The "bonus ball" was who we were sharing the building with. Apart from a few other English Barmy Army types - the entire England Squad were also staying there for the duration of the Test. Pity they had to leave early ;-( - or at least not long after us on the 28th. Freddie Flintoff just blanked me in the lift going back to our respective rooms after the 1st day. I arrived back to the hotel (on foot) just at the same time the England Bus drew up outside. He was obviously disappointed with the team's performance. I was just grateful for the fact I had witnessed a fantastic spectacle, in a fabulous stadium, along with just under 90,000 others.

Highly recommended place to stay if you just want to do your own thing - in a wee bit of luxury.

Almost Perfect

by TripAdvisor Member kiweka26

Well located property only 5 min walk from the city centre. The 1 bedroom apartments are huge - for a major city this is a huge plus. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend for a long-term stay as it has all the facilities (laundry, full kitchen, balcony). Breakfast in the restaurant was excellent, as were the gym, pool & spa. Only tiny negative was the bathroom, it needs stronger lighting and I noticed hair that wasn't mine on the bathroom floor next to the shower. Otherwise, would definitely recommend to others especially if planning a longer stay.

Good spacious apartments near the shops on Collins

by TripAdvisor Member Thorndon

Saville on Russell is a serviced apartment hotel, on Russell Street north of Bourke Street, on the edge of Chinatown and a simple walk to the fashion shops of Collins Street. Our one bedroom apartment was very spacious, airy, with an interesting view over Chinatown and all the facilities you could need (including a good kitchen). The neighbouring small service stores have a strongly Asian focus in their limited stocks, but there is a good supermarket a little over a block away. There is a first floor restaurant in Saville itself but we never made it there, not even for breakfast. The front of office staff are exceptional in their commitment to help you, their efforts to anticipate your needs, and their suggestions to help. Like most apartment hotels there is nothing much in the way of public areas, but with the living space in the apartment you would readily welcome visitors in the apartment. At the right rate this would be a good option for a longish stay in central Melbourne. There are no trams in Russell Street, but the stop in Bourke Street is close by, and with a day metro card for trams buses and trains,we found it was easy to get around all of Melbourne, including out to some suburbs. Apartment design and facilities were excellent, Cleaning and servicing good.Recommended.
