Great Location - Comfortable

The Mercure is very convenient to major points of Melbourne, and for those points you don't want to stroll to, tram stops are right outside. There is a tram stop for the free tram right out front, and for other lines, you only have to walk a block or two, and if you are looking for the train, the Flinder Station is a 5 minute walk. Treasury Gardens are right across the street, With the Queen Victoria Gardens and Yarra River just around the corner.
The entry is very nice, neat and tidy. The rooms themselves were nice size, very comfortable beds, supplied with hot water pot and instant coffee/tea bags, large desk area, reasonable-size bathroom. My only negative would be the housecleaning staff, who we seemed to "be in the way of" one morning, and they only partially cleaned the room, leaving dirt all over the bathroom floor and one bed only partially made.
However, the desk staff were terrific, extremely helpful, jumping at the chance to answer any questions and help us book tours, etc.
We had breakfast included as part of our deal, and enjoyed it very much. I would not recommend their bacon (very raw) or eggs (don't like sunny side up) but there was alot more to choose from, and the staff there was also very nice and helpful.
This is not a location to stay if you want a gorgeous view, but it is a great place for a comfortable room with a quick, convenient location to most of Melbourne. I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Unique Quality: The lobby offered complimentary newspapers and fresh fruit all day, which I found very nice.
The staff, especially Laura, made me feel so comfortable about asking for help for anything and everything around the city -- made it very easy to get around.
