Good hostel for Christmas and the New Year?
by lmrtw
Hi,
I'll be leaving for a round the world trip later this year which will include Christmas day and New years in Melbourne, therefore it would be great if anyone could recommend a good hostel in Melbourne to spend the festive period at?

i know a little about the hostels in melbourne - but - do you want a party animal place or somewhere more refined and quieter?
do you want it right in the heart of melbourne near Flinders st station or are you prepared to go out a bit - lots of hostels in St Kilda for instance

I don't know about the Festive Season, but my stay at The Nunnery was very enjoyable. Good amenities, free breakfast, good location.

Thanks for the suggestions, it doesn't need to be a party hostel, however was ideally looking for somewhere that will do something for their guests over the holidays (I know some hostels organise more activities that others), for example I was in Queenstown, NZ a few years ago on Christmas day and we had a BBQ at the hostel which was excellent!

The base backpackers is a really good hostel.
It is in St. Kilda.
They have a bar downstairs that is all part of the hostel.
I stayed there for one night, it was better than i thought it was going to be.
It is only a short tram ride to Melboune CBD providing you don't do what i did and get on a tram going the opposite way around.
Here is a link for you anyway

Melbourne is a wonderful city....

Melbourne is a wonderful city. Great shopping, eating places, events. The transport system is great. They have trams which appear to run often and we used these to go to St Kilda, Brunswick and to the Nike Factory Outlet in Smith Street If you go to Melbourne Central shopping centre on the hour there is a clock (pictured) which plays Waltzing Matilda as these figures drop down from the clock and twirl around.
Walking along the Yarra River by Southgate and on to the Promenade outside the Casino.
St Kilda Beach
by l_joo
St Kilda Beach is a beach, full of beach sands, beige color, the white birds and peoples. I don't know whether this beach is clean but at least I saw not much of litterings except some bottles of Victoria Bitter, much better than many other beaches in other parts of the world toady. The street is clean, kiosk are clean too and I saw many superbikers hanging around in full leather suit, hot but they enjoy. Overall I see this beach OK, is my viewpoint anyway, foreign viewpoint.
Four seasons in one day.

Make sure you bring clothes for all seasons to Melbourne.
It can start off with a beautifully warm and sunny day and turn freezing by mid afternoon.
So in summer, make sure you always have something warm out with you in case a cool change comes in the afternoon...or you'll freeze - Australian cold of course :o)
Graffiti - Street Art
by WannaTravel77
Melbourne is filled with lanes. Lanes filled with cafes and restaurants. But Melbourne is developing a world wide reputaion for it's Graffiti or Street Art. There are 2 must see lanes in Melbourne you have to check out.
Hosier Lane
Across from ACMI, Federation square. This lane features some cool and crazy artwork and tags.
Centre Place
Located close to Hosier lane, north of Degraves St. lane and off Flinders Lane. Walk down past all the restaurants and before you get to the shops turn left and you'll see a little alcove with Street art.
