tram map too small to read

by margsch

Me again, I,ve now booked an apartment in Collins street, Holiday Inn was a bit too dear. I printed off the map of inner city trams but can,t read a thing the print is minute. Does the free tram go past Southern Cross station? and where then heading into the city.
If I want to get from Souther C. to mid way up Collins st what tram can I use.?
The map looks very impressive on the computer screen but as soon as I print it
it,s only partly there and again unreadable.
Is the Immigration Museum worth visiting?

The city circle tram runs along past the docklands so it really by-passes the SC station now. it passes the corner of Flinders and Spencer Street so its not far a walk from that stop. I have a map which may help that I will email you. You can walk up collins street or take any number tram from the stop near the Spencer Street corner. Just jump on one and you will be fine. The tram drivers announce each stop so if you know the cross street you are looking for, keep listening and you will know when to get off the tram. Yes the Immigration Museum is worth seeing.

The Immigration Museum is absolutely worth seeing. It is a lively presentation that explains how immigration worked in different times by showing the stories of individual people, which makes it very personal. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Travel Tips for Melbourne

take a tour in the City. First you can start stopping for a look at Flinders Street Station and St. Paul's Cathedral. Then up Swanston Street Walk passing the City Square and Melbourne's Town Hall. Once you reach Little Bourke Street you must take a visit to China Town, and stop for a meal in a Chinese restaurant. I miss Melbourne very much because I was born in Melbourne, and left in 1972 when I was 11 y.o. I now live in Italy and spent 5 weeks in Melbourne in 1995/96. Everything was so great when I arrived on the 9 of December 1995. It was my dream to go back in Australia for a visit someday, and that day was a dream coming true.

A tale of haute cuisine

Lygon Street. Australia's best street for restaurants. Period. Others may try to copy but none have achieved quite the same ambience though Perth's Northside comes close. Imagine al fresco dining, a small gap and then the main restaurant. Imagine this going block after block. Imagine getting hassled as your pass each cafe by the spivs. Now you're getting the image.
I love it. It's one of the must-do things when you're in Melbourne. If you only have one night out to dine then it should be at Lygon Street. Predominantly Italian but there are many other national dishes you can try.
We got caught up with Harry, the tout for Piccolo Mondo, who hustled us to a table and befriended us in such a manner that when we left he embraced Rosemarie on at least two occasions and enthusiastically shook my hand more than once.
You have to love an experience like that. Oh.....and the food was great also.

Melbourne: Architectural Vernacular Pt 2

by Intrepidduck

The City of Melbourne Building is at times seeming like a ship in the night, none the less a majestic jesture of the late 19th Century in all it's wealth and slendour as was then Marvellous Melbourne. This building has intrigued many people in Melbourne. I don't know for sure who was the architech behind this masterpiece of flamboyance, but would not be surprised if it was the architect by the name of Beswicke. I have no doudt that he must have been one of this city's most ambitious architects of the late 19th Century. However there is little information about his architectural firm or himself for that matter.

The City of Melbourne Building stands at the SE corner of Elizabeth and Little Collins Streets.

Collingwood vs. Carlton

by paoseo

One night my friend Micky had to attend a job dinner with her boyfriend so she asked to her colleague to "babysitter " me . I was very happy when she told me her program for the first part of the evening : she offered me to attend an Australian Football match: Collingwood(the area where my friend was living in) versus Carlton (the area, historically inhabitated motly by italian immigrants and also where they work)!!! In Italy our way of being a fan of a team is hugely different!!! In Australia no one shout at anyone, you can see fans of both the team sitting one next the other and when the match finish all go out singing their anthem!!! All was so different!!!

House auctions. Every weekend, houses are sold by public auction on the streets of Melbourne. You get a chance to view the properties before auction starts, so you can see how Melbournites live. There is no charge to watch these auctions [unless your nose-scratching gets mistaken for a bid], and some auctioneers are quite entertaining. Look for lists of real estate auctions in the Saturday newspapers.
