More about Oaks on Lonsdale
Comfortable and modern
We recently stayed at the Oaks for four nights. We had a one bedroom apartment on the 14th floor and found it very clean, modern and with good quality fittings. The apartment was roomy and the furniture comfortable. Outside the council were repairing footpaths which was inconvenient but the noise didn't impact too much on us.
The kitchen contained everything we could possibly need, but because there were no instructions to the dishwasher and I could not figure it out, we had to ask the staff to turn it on. We also had to get help to find a signal for the large television (again no instructions). The service man who came could not have been more obliging.
We (one with arthritis and one a child) found getting into the shower/bath a challenge. There were no hand rails to hold on to and the bath when wet was slippery. It is an accident waiting to happen.
The bed (we requested two singles and got a king) was very comfortable although the pillows were over-full and kept on escaping.
All things considered, the Oaks is well located, is good value for money and we would certainly recommend it.
Hard to fault but lacks atmosphere.
We booked our room via wotif.com.au and paid around AUD $159 per night, which is slightly more than we usually pay for Pacific International Apartments on Exhibition. I've written previously about the house keeping standards at the Pacific International, so decided on the basis of the reviews on this web site to give this new apartment hotel a try.
Checking in was straightforward, if a little cheerless. Our reservation was efficiently located and we were advised to return after 2:00pm. Fair enough! One can't expect an early check-in on every occasion.
The room was situated on level 10 and looked exactly as depicted in the marketing collateral. With the windows open, it was a little noisy and the inner city aspect was of commercial buildings only. Overall the apartment was superior to the Pacific International. The king size bed in particular was a winner and the "wooden" floors attractive.
There were a couple of surprises. Our room was situated right next to the rubbish chute. Imagine bags of empty bottles flying down a metal chute from 20 floors up. It would wake the dead. Also; as with the Pacific International, the shower over the bath arrangement is guaranteed to flood the bathroom floor. How can an experienced architect get it so wrong? It must be as annoying for the house-keeping staff as for the paying guests. Why not design a double shower and create a real point of difference?
Of similar standard, the new tiles in the brand new foyer were already starting to break. On the subject of the foyer, it is poorly designed, unwelcoming and has no style or pizzazz to it. Why not build a bar/restaurant and sub let it to an experienced operator? This substantial building could be fantastic, but it falls short of the mark because it has no life and no atmosphere.
Whilst it is the new kid on the block, this establishment will do good business, but it will need to re-think the overall experience to be competitive after the gloss has worn off.
I give it three and a half stars.
Two of us stayed in a one bedroom fully self contained apartment. The apartment looked just like the internet pictures. it was near new, roomy enough for a long weekend and had a good sized kitchen. We stayed on the 22nd floor and had fabulous views. The hotel is a very short walk to the train and the free circle cirlce tram. It is also a stroll to the Queen Victoria Markets and Lygon St. We would definitely stay there again. also has a foodstore next door which sells alcohol!
Oaks On Lonsdale - Shaky Start But Rocked Thereafter!
Arrived at the apartments at eleven in the morning, but they did not offer me early check-in. I had to walk around the city til two in the afternoon. When I finally checked in, I had to carry my own luggage to the room, because there was no porter to assist.
We had a studio apartment on level twenty-three, with views overlooking Lonsdale street and the Carlton gardens. The view was beautiful, and dining outside on the reasonably- sized balcony was something we enjoyed frequently during our stay.
The kitchen was awesome! Magnificent stainless steel fridge and all cook wear available, made cooking outside of home a pleasure!
All furniture and finishes were immaculate- great color scheme, great design- very comfortable and homely!
Massive plasma TV and stereo, cosy living area, a small plasma mounted in the bedroom wall, plenty of mirrored robes for your luggage, and a lovely city view from the bedroom, this place created a relaxing atmosphere.
The bathroom was big, plenty of room to move, with a big bath tub-
perfect for a bubble bath! Included a laundry with washer and dryer-which was awesome!
Service and cleaners were good and responded to our service needs immediately. Thumbs Up!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, and recommend this place to anyone despite the initial check-in hiccup.
We have just returned from a fabulous stay in a two bedroom apartment at the Oaks on Lonsdale. We were with another couple and elected to have the two bedroom apartment which was very spacious, modern, clean and had fantastic views from the balcony and both bedrooms.
The Oaks is located very conveniently only a stone's throw from the train and tram tracks which make Melbourne so easy to travel around.
The kitchen was well equipped and spacious however we only made toast there!! Melbourne has too many good restaurants to dine in!!
I was a little dubious about the reception staff after reading some of the previous reviews but was highly impressed by the service offered - they were extremely helpful and looked after us well, especially Nick.
Enjoy your stay!!
well equipped serviced apartment
According to the hotel's website, this place opened in November 2007. This is not the place to stay if you are after a traditional hotel with restaurants, gymnasiums, swimming pools or business centres. It has none of those. The Oaks on Lonsdale offers modern, as new fully furnished apartments serviced daily. As you would expect from a near new place, the 1 bedroom apartment I stayed in was modern, clean and in excellent condition. The kitchen is fully equipped with stovetop, oven, microwave, dishwasher and all utensils you would ever need. There is a small IGA store just next door where you can buy essential supplies. The bathroom is the usual shower over bath arrangement and includes a laundry closet with combined washer/drier (washing powder sachets included) and washing tub. King size bed in the bedroom was comfortable, although as others have mentioned the pillows are large and uncomfortable. The pictures on the hotel website are a true representation of what you get. The property is located a 2 minute walk from Parliament station (Lonsdale St entrance) and is within walking distance of many restaurants and shops.
Overall, great value (I paid $149 a night) for a quality apartment.
Great stay, great service
My boyfriend and I stayed in a studio suite in early May after reading lots of good reviews. Having arrived off the midnight flight at 6am we were pleasently supprised when we were met by a nice man at the reception and even though we didnt have a booking until 2pm (checkin time) he took our bags to the store room and told us he would try organise a room asap and to call back early. Having an early checkin was great as we needed the sleep and the room was very neat tidy and modern. The bathroom had double sinks which was handy and the kitchen was very impressive for a studio room (inc dishwasher!). The only down side was there wasnt any table or chairs to sit at so anything we ate we had to sit on the bed. We stayed 3nights and the studio room suited us well but if we had of stayed longer I think we would have upgraded to a appartment (its very reasonably priced in comparison to everything else available). Oh and the location was great! walk down the street to the shops, chinatown and the free circle tram. and there is a iga/bottle-o next door to the oaks but be warned prices are a bit of a rip off (and the beer was out of date)
Absolutley Loved It
"This Hotel is Perfect"
My wife and I stayed 7 nights in a 1 Bedroom Apartment on the 16th floor. The room was Very Spacious with all the mod cons. The king bed very comfortable and views from the room lovely.Room was serviced well each day with plenty extras i.e shampoo coffee etc.
The only complaint we have is the washing machine/dryer it is complicated and had problems drying, we got there in the end though.
I recommend the hotel to all and wish you a happy stay as we would go back here anytime.
One of the best
Stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment for a long weekend in Melbourne. The apartment was even better than the photos (that never happens!)
Our apartment was very spacious with a kitchen bigger than my house, dining & lounge room with nice new furniture and a nice bedroom.
Fitout and inclusions in the room were excellent - everything you'd need & more: pots, pans, bottle openers, coffee plunger, teapot, CD player, washing machine & dryer, plasma, desk, balcony etc...
This is one of the best places I've stayed, and it was sensational value for money ($150 a night).
Everything you could want
Fantastic apartments with all new appliances and finishings. Very comfortable. Great heat pump for chillier seasons. An apartment you would want to live in! Close to Lygon Street and Greek Precinct, all other attractions only minutes walk away.
