Hello,
St Kilda is a tram ride away from the city area of Melbourne, you can get to St Kilda from anywhere in Melbourne. The train and tram system are very good.
There are a number of tours that go to Phillip Island, this is usually to see the Penguins. This is a day trip from Melbourne. There also are a number of tours that do day trips along the Great Ocean Road. ( I would do this one before the Phillip Island one:))
ALso I would consider a day tour to the Yarra Valley wineries.
Doing the above tours would save a lot of hassle/trouble with public transport.

st kilda is easy and i have given you the link to public tranpsort in melbourne to help you find your way

there is public transport out to the yarra valley - but it is not ideal for a wine tour so I suggest you go to a tourist info office (there is one in federation Square right in the centre of town) and find out what a bus tour would cost.
also for phillip island

there are lots of options - i did see a boat tour that sails to phillip island!

Travel Tips for Melbourne

Not so much Melbourne the city...

by revere

Not so much Melbourne the city but Victoria the state has diversity of landscape. Semi-desert areas in the north, rainforests, grasslands, alpine forests, fantastic beaches(expect to drive at least 1 hour)
Melbourne has heaps of bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs. Cheap Asian restaurants, nice cafes and my friends.

Rialto Towers

by CandS

Go to the top of the Rialto Towers - the Melbourne Observation Deck. It gives a great view of Melbourne! It is open from 10 am till late, 7 days a week.

Melbourne Cup Day

by arianne_1504

Known as the 'Race that stops a nation', Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Melbourne. Melbourne Cup is held on the first Tuesday in November each year and is a great excuse to don a fancy hat and dress and drink champagne till the cows (or horses) come home.

Packing List

by Skylink

Toorak Road between Punt Road and Chapel Street is an area where there are lots of boutiques. I went to this area one time for lunch. (Placed here to keep everything on one page in this short version of Melbourne page) Shot Tower is a brick tower that is enclosed in a glass dome that is part of the Melbourne Central shopping centre. It is located on Latrobe Street near Elizabeth Street.

Relax at a secluded beach

by marisa81

While in Melbourne you can head to the sometimes crowded St.Kilda beach, or you can take the train to Frankston (end of the train line in zone 3). This little town just on the outskirts of Melbourne, is a great escape out of the city. The day I was at the beach, there was about 5 other people there. The town also has quite a big shopping mall.
