How to find my old friends in Melbourne before a revisit?

by francesok

I am likely to return to Melbourne in about a year's time.
I used to work there early 80s at the MS centre St Albans and holidayed there last in the mid 1990s.
I would love to get back in touch with some friends from work, particularly one who may have since moved back to her native New Zealand, and wonder what the options are in terms of maybe placing an ad locally in Melbourne? Or indeed any advice on any kind of web site - I think there is the work place equivalent of Friends Reunited if anyone can help? Not any idea how to go about this.

Thanks for any help!

Facebook has a search facility whereby you can search for work collegues, school or uni friends etc worldwide. I have found it to be extremely useful. You may have to open a facebook acc, but try first.

Friends Reunited allows you to sign up for workplaces as well as schools, I'd suggest you look there rather than on a website designed to provide advice on travel: http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk/Search.page/places/workplace.
You can also try googling names, with a possible location and/or type of activity if you know what they might be doing 15 years later.

The Herald Sun Newspaper "Melbourne's highest selling newspaper" has a section called "Desperately Seeking" in its Sunday edition. People can post that they are looking for a particular person or anyone who might know of their whereabouts. Send your contact details, the name of the person you are looking to make contact with plus any facts that might help identify them to Email:seeking@sundayheraldsun.com.au
good luck

Sounds like a fairly obvious suggestion, but have you tried googling them? Try them on the Aus Google site for a greater chance of a hit. Do you know where in NZ the friend was from? NZ is a pretty small place, and I'm sure you would be able to track him/her down there somehow (I'm a Kiwi living in Melbourne). There's a small chance s/he is listed on www.keanewzealand.com as a member so might be another place to check (NZ expats)

You could also try the white pages website if you remember a bit of information about them, give it a go;
www.whitepages.com.au

Hope this helps

Hi John from Oz

I used that e-mail to inquire about a word limit or cost but no one ever replied in 2 attempts does the Herald Sun have a website? Might call them.

AllOverRover, think Wendy was from Christchurch but not 100% sure to be honest. She was a trained nurse, whichi in Britain is RGN, wonder if anyone knows what the equivalent is in Oz as perhaps I could try to contact her that way?

TYVM for the on going help, everyone!

Frances

Travel Tips for Melbourne

make sure you go see an AFL...

by willo35

make sure you go see an AFL game especially a game that has these teams in it: Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton, Richmond. Make sure it's at the MCG because it is meant to be one of the best stadiums in the world. At the MCG make sure you sit in the Southern Stand because it is the best stand to sit in for the best atmosphere.

Bird

by l_joo

This white bird is everywhere in Australia, I don't know why, some said it can speak human language. This species of white bird is about the size of a your head or maybe your foot, I prefer to not Google search the scientific name or its coutry of origin, etc. White bird of Australia is a bird in white color, I saw it in Australia, is not a pig, is a bird.

Tram sitting & watching

by l_joo

Inside a tram to Chapel street, I was sitting as usual and later I saw 3 students walked in, they talk non-stop, all of them girls and one of them was very special. She put her legs up on the tram seat and then occasionally let one down, and then up, then left, then right, I have a camera ready on my hand, so I snap it.

You just never know!

I guess the easiest way to travel is with a pack. Melbourne is pretty easy to get around but a pack is so much easier to carry than a suitcase. Don't assume that just because it's summer it will be hot because it won't be. Summer is harder to pack for than winter cos the temperature varies so much ( at least in winter you know it's going to be damn cold). Summer can vary from around 20degC up to as high as 40C so bring lots of layers and at least one relativly warm jumper as the nights can still be cool. For summer a good deoderant is essential for those hot days and a good sunsceen as the sun will fry you to a crisp. Bring a bug repellant as the mozzies can be a real pain in the butt. Pharmacies and doctors are not hard to find so you will have no problem getting medicine if you need it. Melbourne and the surrounding areas have some of the most amazing photo opportunities so bring a good camera and lots of film. You can camp in caravan parks just about anywhere once you head out of the city so if it's your thing it's a cheap way to stay somewhere. I wouldn't advise it in winter though it's just too cold. We have some of the most beautiful beaches so bring you beach stuff for sure!

WILLIAM BARAK BRIDGE.

by wanderingbilly

WE CAME ACROSS THE WILLIAM BARAK BRIDGE WHILE WALKING BACK FROM THE VODAFONE ARENA.. THE 525M BRIDGE WAS BUILT FOR THE 2006 COMMONWEALTH GAMES AND WAS NAMED AFTER WILLIAM BARAK THE VICTORIAN ABORIGINAL DIPLOMAT NEGOTIATOR AND ARTIST.
IT PLAYS OVER 50 CULTURAL SONGS FROM ARTISTS AROUND THE COMMONWEALTH IN AN ENTANGLEMENT OF VOICE AND SONG....IT IS A REAL JOY JUST TO WALK ACROSS THE BRIDGE AND LISTEN TO ALL THE DIFFERENT VOICES AND SONG AS THEY MIX IN FROM ONE TO ANOTHER. THE BRIDGE LINKS MELBOURNE'S CBD AND THE MCG AND ALL THE OTHER SPORTING VENUES.
TRY WALKING ACROSS AT NIGHT WHEN IT IS LIT UP WITH THE CITY SKYLINE IN THE BACKGROUND... I LOVED IT..
EVERY CITY SHOULD HAVE A BRIDGE LIKE THIS..
