Daytime travel

by farmerjane

So, now that I know where to have a good time in the evening, I am wondering what kind of outdoor life there is in Melbourne? What are the best ways to get around. I heard renting a car is costly...

Melbourne trains, trams and buses are good. For getting out of Melbourne you have choices of V/Line trains and buses. Tour companies also do 1 day trips along the Great Ocean Road - (well worth doing.) or other surrounding places. Plenty of choice. You will love Melbourne, so easy to get around and if you want to shop there is great shopping.

The tram ride out to St Kilda is nice--you could get off and visit the war memorial and the Botanic Gardens.

You could also walk along the Yarra river or take a river cruise.

You could do a tour of the MCG and olympic venues.

Go to Victoria Market or Bridge Road and Chapel Street for shopping.

Visit Fitzroy Gardens and Captain Cooks cottage within walking distance of the city.

The trams/trains/buses will take you anywhere you want to go.

Enjoy Melbourne.

A trip down the Yarra River to Williamstown (the first capital ) is a great thing to do - the restaurant scene in Williamstown is tops.

i would not recommend renting a car as the traffic is heavy and you really need to know where you are going - I,m a former Victorian and I hate driving there, several lanes in each direction so you need to know which lane to be in, and there certainly isn,t any way to gaze around at the scenery while driving!. The Botanical Gardens are lovely, there are also half day trips out to the Dandenongs. In Southern Cross station, formerly called Spencer Street station, there is a big factory outlet for shopping(up the escalator) but I did hear that this is closing. There are also factory outlets at Chapel stree Richmond - Designer clothes at very marked down prices.

Yes margsch, the Factory outlet at Southern cross station has moved to South Wharf down near the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Waterfront City at Docklands has a harbour town shopping centre of factory outlets.

Hi,

If you're into wines and local produce, would also suggest you try get a day tour out to the Yarra Ranges. It's only about an hour away from Melbourne and you'll get to sample some lovely things.

More locally, like others have suggested, take a tram ride out to the inner suburbs like Fitzroy, Carlton, St Kilda, South Yarra. Those suburbs have nice shopping strips and good cafes. Each has a different vibe so depending on what you're after...ie. Fitzroy is a bit edgy, South Yarra is a little more upmarket etc.

If you're coming in the warmer months, there's festivals on in various locations. Try checking out http://www.thatsmelbourne.com.au for info on what's happening.

Have fun and enjoy Melbourne! =)

Travel Tips for Melbourne

CBD

by chennaismartguy

During the weekends and sometime during the weekday, you can see lot of people performing their skills especially in the Central Business District....mostly near the big shopping malls in and around Burke Street. Its nice to watch/hear while you wait for your trams or when you need to relax a bit after hectic shopping!! You can contribute as much as you can to them... The guy in the photo is inserting a Foot long knife inside his mouth (His esophagus must be wider than normal????)

Baton_West moves on...

by dracko

While in Melbourne, I had the great pleasure of meeting VTer eviltooth, and passing on the infamous Baton_West. The baton had already completed one circuit around the world (unlike its brother Baton_East which is languishing somewhere in Europe right now), and I started it off on its 2nd lap. Eviltooth was kind enough to show me around town some, and we had a great time strolling around, sightseeing, and hiding from the rain...

Watch a tree

by l_joo

Watching trees is one of a must in travels, I snapped some good photos of tree trunk and leaves, etc in my collection. I am very sure this tree trunk look new to me, never saw it in my country, I consider it an exotic product, rare and so I uploaded on my tip to let you know how I feel, it may be a lousy tip for you.

Melbourne - City of many cultures

by Sweetberry1

Melbourne has many different cultures,
It is a city of many nations and peoples..
All these people have brought with them, their traditions, customs, foods, and many other things that identify them with the country that they left behind.
This makes Melbourne the wonderful place it is today.

Australia vs. Italy - Wallaby Rugby

by ATXtraveler

If you are lucky enough to catch an International Rugby Test match here in Melbourne, it will most likely be played at Telstra Dome.

Australia won 69-21, although it was not really a fair match. The Wallabies were bigger, stronger and faster than Italy at every position.

It was however a great excuse to take some photos and drink some Carlton Draught.
