Cosmopolitan ---good value

by TripAdvisor Member m23WAust

We enjoyed a short break(5 days) in Melbourne opting for a Bayside location. We found the Cosmopolitan to be ideally located for accessibility to easy public transport and with a range of entertainment options on its doorstep.
Our accommodation (Terrace Room)was crisp,smart&comfortable.
Service was friendly&enthusiastic without being obsequious.
Prices are reasonable with no hidden costs .

Not a problem at The Cosmopolitan, St Kilda

by TripAdvisor Member Knockers

I was the tour leader/organiser for 12 avid Rugby Union followers from Robina, on the Gold Coast , who travelled to Melbourne to watch the Bledisloe Cup match between Australian and New Zealand. on 30th June 2007
We chose to stay away from the CBD and had the pleasure of staying at the Cosmopolitan Hotel at St Kilda for three nights. I received nothing but compliments from my tour group in regards to the hotel facilities, friendly staff and excellent food in the restaurant. We would have no hesitation in booking the hotel again or recommending to others.
We also found the location of Cosmopolitan was ideal as it is located on public transport routes, the trams in particular and only a short ride from the CBD if required.
Thanks to the great team at Cosmopolitan

If its St Kilda it has to be the Cosmopolitan

by TripAdvisor Member regulartraveller15

Here is a gem of a hotel situated right in the heart of St Kilda, only a 15 minute tram ride away from Melbournes city centre. The Cosmopolitan has a nice funky feel to it, good restaurant on premises, tip try the Mussells Provencale. The rooms are spacious and really nicely appointed, plasma TV, internet connection, good work area for business travellers, comfortable bed, nice furnishings all in neutral tones and an excellent well appointed bathroom. The staff are freindly but not at all overbearing. The hotel is well situated for pubs, cafes and restaraunts. Tram stop just up the road. If ou are visiting Melbourne and have business in the area or want to stay in a convient location other than the CBD then the Cosmopolitan has a lot going for it. It is a memeber of the Eight Hotels Group who also have some other rather funky propeties elsewhere in Sydney and Canberra.

Fantastic location, good wheelchair access facilities

by TripAdvisor Member Wheelchair_Traveller

My partner and I booked via email direct to the hotel for seven nights in July 2007, and subsequently extended our stay by two nights. We chose this hotel based on price ($AUD130 per night Sunday to Thursday), availability of wheelchair accessible rooms and on-site parking included at no extra charge (we drove to Melbourne from Adelaide).

We had a fantastic stay - the real selling point of this property is its location. We have stayed in Melbourne's CBD on previous occasions, but will stay in St Kilda on future visits. Acland Street's restaurants, cafes and shops are only a block away from this property, and are open late every day of the week. Unlike hotels in the CBD, where the surrounding areas can feel 'dead' after 6pm, this hotel had places to go and things to do nearby until late, including Acland Street cake shops (mmmmmmmm ... cherry crumble and jam donuts).

In addition, two tram lines with low-floor accessible trams have stops close-by at the intersection of Carlisle and Acland Streets. We used trams extensively to travel into the city. Note though that the nearest accessible tram stop was (at the time of writing) being built on Fitzroy Street. My partner was able to assist me onto the trams nevertheless, but this would be difficult without assistance or a portable ramp.

The hotel room accessiblity was good: large bathroom, handrails around the toilet and a good-sized fold-down seat in a roll-in shower. The bed was at a good height and very comfortable, with a warm doona and generous pillows. Room facilities included a kettle, tea, coffee and safe large enough for a laptop. Hotel facilities included a coin-operated guest laundry (useful for longer stays) and a coin-operated internet terminal.

On-site parking was a key attraction, and although there did not appear to be any designated wheelchair parking spaces, we had no problems finding parking spaces that allowed us room to get in and out easily. (Parking was very scarce though on Friday and Saturday nights and a parking space was not guaranteed on these nights.)

The only minor criticisms were noisy neighbours in an adjoining room (who managed to set off a fire alarm in the early hours of the morning), a less-than-effective extraction fan in the bathroom and cleaners who walked in on my partner in the shower!

These are minor quibbles at best and do not detract from what was overall a very enjoyable stay.

Hard to beat In St Kilda

by TripAdvisor Member mick909

If you want to stay in St Kila it's pretty hard to beat The Cosmpolitan. Perfect location, very nice modern rooms, we had a balcony where you could see over towards Luna Park, and it was $150 per night during the Australian Open tennis. Very good value. The rooms are not huge, so if you are looking to hang out in your orom then maybe not the best choice, but if you want a modern, clean, very affordable hotel then try it. When I say affordable I don't mean cheap or inferior, it was a very nice hotel that was very reasonably priced. I would recommend it in a heart beat

Would stay here again.....

by TripAdvisor Member SydneyGirl08

My partner and I recently stayed at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in St Kilda. Last time we were in Melbourne, we stayed right in the city, which was convenient, but we thought that St Kilda had a much nicer feel to it - and we could still get everywhere quite easily by tram or taxi. We stayed in a deluxe terrace room - it was a decent size - not huge but large enough and on the top floor. Very clean and modern. The balcony was a good size with a small table and two chairs - looked out towards Luna Park and you could see glimpses of the ocean from the balcony which was nice. One thing to note is that the balconies are not very private - there is only a low railing between each balcony and you can see into every balcony (and some rooms) on this floor from your balcony! Beds were pretty comfortable. Flat screen TV mounted on the wall - free to air channels plus a small number of Fox channels (no movies). Bathroom was OK - very clean and a good shower. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We had breakfast in the hotel one morning and it was very nice - not a huge size but the food was delicious and service was great. We wanted to try dinner there but there were so many other great restaurants to try around the area that we didn't get a chance. Would probably stay there if I went to St Kilda again, but would possibly look into a studio apartment instead which is a little bigger with a lounge, but no balcony.

Fantastic Location, Very Helpful Staff

by TripAdvisor Member JohnsonCJ2

When I was looking for a great location in Melbourne I checked w/a friend from there and TripAdvisor. He suggested St Kilda and TripAdvisor's #1 was the Cosmo. We loved it. The location can't be beat, half a block from Acland St (and it's bars/restaurants) and 3 blocks from the beach.

The room was clean, big and free DSL certainly was an unexpected perk. The tourist info available in the lobby got us a rental car that Budget dropped off and picked up so we didn't lose any time hitting the road.

The tourist info suggested St Kilda Sea Baths a spa and public pool about five blocks away with a truly amazing pre/post massage lounge overlooking the ocean.

The food in La Kitchen the in house restaurant was yummy and decidedly upscale for reasonable prices and they let us get something to go before they opened so we could make our early flight.

I can't think of anywhere else I'd stay when I go back.

Cool, contemporary and comfortable

by TripAdvisor Member dublin_boy

I'd concur with the other reviewers: this is a really good spot for a holiday. When we arrived the weather was cool and damp and St Kilda looked miserable. Once the weather picked up we discovered how close we were to the sea, the shops and restaurants of Ackland Steet and quickly grew to love St Kilda. Melbourne's trams are great and the 3 routes serving St Kilda can take you to most places of interest in the city.

Our one regret was only having 5 days!
