any 3 day passes for trams/trains

by margsch

Hi, am going to Melb for 3 days of looking around, I haven,t selected accommodation yet but am considering somewhere on Queens Road. I,m not at all familiar with the public transport system, I,m always with family and just follow along blindly! Is there such a thing as a 3 day pass for trams and trains? Even just trams would be good as I will probably stick to the city area. Or any other type of day ticket that you think would be good, the first day I just want to browse in the shops.

G"day Margaret
sadly we dont have 3 days ticket :-(
you can only get daily or weekly.
your best option is to buy 5 daily or 10 times 2 hours ticket it cost the same price.they cost 29.40 full fare or 14.70 Concession.
if you validated 2 hours ticket 2 times thats ll last you till 3 am next day.
if you stay around the city there is a free city tram and bus taken you around.
as well there is avery cheap ticket call a city saver.
enjoy your stay and i hope it ll be a nice weather for you in Melbourne.
Cheers

the city saver is only for a limited area in the inner city

there is a free tram which circles the city - it is a different colour, sort of brown/maroon

Although the 3 hotels along Queens Road are quite good, they have nothing close to them for "supplies." That area is mainly office buildings and quite "dead" at night. There are also about 5 other hotels that are on StKilda Road and likewise "dead area." I'd suggest you stay in either city or in many ways better off in St Kilda. From St Kilda there are 2 tram lines that take you into city, however as you've said "as I will probably stick to the city area" then why not stay in the city?

The free tram is only in the city and is a good way of getting to see much of the city. There's also a free tourist bus service that includes the Art Centre and goes to Lygon Street Carlton. Here's a link http://www.onlymelbourne.com.au/melbourne_details.php?id=6706

Travel Tips for Melbourne

I was only in Melbourne 2 days....actually went to Falls Creek to ski...excellent fun!! In Melbourne go shopping!! (I seem to do a lot of that!!) & also the Casino...they have huge fire balls that explode every 10 mins outside. Lots of clubs, food, etc... fun!! Skiing @ Falls Creek...So much fun!! Accidently went down the intermediate trail on the first day of skiing.....I was a major beginner!! I went straight down & ended up banging into a bunch of people waiting for the chair lift...hurting a few of them. At least people stayed out my way for the rest of my trip!!

The Flinders Street Station is the hub of Melbourne's train system with all trains beginning or ending their journey there. You cannot miss it - it is the large orange building located on the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street.

Antipodes Festival

by grkboiler

Melbourne has the largest Greek population in the world outside of Greece and is the 3rd largest Greek-speaking city in the world. The Greek community holds an annual festival from March to April called the Antipodes Festival. The major highlight of this festival is the two-day Greek Glendi held on Lonsdale Street near the end of March on a Saturday and Sunday around March 25th for Greek Independence Day. This is the largest ethnic festival in Australia and the largest Greek festival in the world.

You will find tents set up for food, shopping, arts, sports, and religion. There is a stage set up at the corner of Russell and Lonsdale set up for Greek dance troupes to perform, and a live Greek band will also be on hand. You can also stop inside one of the many stores or restaurants on Lonsdale Street. This festival attracts thousands of people each year.

Catch a footy game!!

by GlobalMatt

I had the pleasure of catching a live Aussie rules football match. I was at the MCG stadium, which has a capacity of over 100,000 people! It is primarily for matches of cricket, but 4 AFL teams play here as well. This venue was the centerpiece for the 1956 olympics. The hometown Melbourne Demons defeated the crosstown rival Geelong Cats 87-81. It was awesome!! You gotta have a meat pie and sauce at a "footy" game sometime. It's the Aussie equivalent of having a hot dog at an American baseball game.

There are many spectacular beaches outside the city of Melbourne. Not necessarily the type that you can lay back and sunbathe on, but are wonderful to walk along. The rock structure along the coast has been shaped by the wind and the tide, and can absolutely take your breath away. I was walking along the coast with friends, when I happened to turn around for some reason, and managed to catch this rainbow on film before it faded away.
