More about Travelodge Hotel Southbank Melbourne
Central location in Melbourne
by TripAdvisor Member Brizlady
Have recently spent 5 days vacation in Melbourne, staying at the Travelodge Southbank. I received excellent service from check-in to check-out. The hotel is very centrally located at Southbank which is a 5 minute walk across the bridge the Flinders Street. Take the Flinders Street underpass and you find yourself in the CBD. At Flinders Street, why not take the free City Tram which is great way of getting your bearings and takes about 40 minutes for a round trip. You can alight along the way and can take in the sights of Docklands, Queen Victoria Markets, Parliament House, Cooks Cottage to name a few. The hotel rooms are comfortable and spacious but remember bring your own toileries as the hotel supplies are limited. There are laundries located on a couple of floors which maybe useful if travelling with children. The kitchenette is great, however, the only down side was there was no toaster!!! The hotel does offer a AU$15 buffet breakfast each day. There is a wonderful food court within 50 paces of the hotel which is opened from 7:00am - 9:00pm daily and offers a huge range of breakfast food plus many other eating options. You can sit outside by the Yarra river and enjoy the view. The hotel also has direct internet access in your room or you may wish to use the internet cafe in the lobby. There is also a 24-hour 7-Eleven store around the corner from the hotel where you can pick up anything from crisps, milk to frozen meals. The hotel is located in a quiet location so you wil not be disturbed with traffic. Also, there is a never ending line of cabs waiting outside. I have visited Melbourne on 4 previous occassions and have always stayed in the CBD. My experience at the Travelodge has cured me of that and would seriously consider staying here again. Another tip, you may wish to catch the shuttle bus service from the airport. AU$15 each way or pay AU$50 for a cab ride.
Quiet and very central

My wife and I stayed at T/L Southbank for 3 nights over the Australia Day long weekend in order to see the Oz Open tennis finals. The tennis was awesome....the hotel wasnt. Check-in and out was speedy and easy with courtious staff. It was priced well and its location is brilliant....a short picturesque walk across the river and you'e in the heart of Melbourne. The rooms are very quiet.....I'm a light sleeper and noise usually wakes me but I slept well even if the mattress was fairly hard. The rooms were clean and although ours was made-up each day and the bins emptied, it wasnt cleaned at all. Our view from the 7th floor was directly into the base of the new Eureka tower which was only about 30 feet away and intimidatingly high (300meters). Value for money at the T/L Southbank is good and I'd recomend it to a friend because the good points certainly outweigh the bad.
Excellent Location

We stayed at the Travelodge in Melbourne for 8 nights in the beginning of Feb. We had been staying in hostels on our trip up until then, so I may be a little biased, but I thought it was great. its perfect if you just want a base to explore Melbourne. The rooms were comfortable and clean, and the location is excellent. it was quiet at night aswell which meant I slept better than I had done in ages!
One the downside - theres no real facilities to use - they only serve breakfast which was $15 each (bit steep considering the Southbank Food Court is 60 seconds away where you could get a huge range of food for a lot less). There was no leisure facilities, but then again thats reflected in the price.
On the upside - the location was excellent - it was central, but really quiet. There is laundry facilities if you are there, like we were, for more than a few days.
The thing that sells this hotel is the value for money and the location - the Langham was right opposite and much dearer. If you want a luxury hotel then this isn't it - but if you want a comfortable place to stay while you enjoy all that Melbourne has to offer, then I can heartily recommend it.
Enjoy!
Value for money

The Travelodge provided us with a very basic, but adequate and clean location very much near the city center. The whole concept of the hotel is aimed at being basic, functional and no-frills, and it does so well. It seems best fit for cost-concious, short stay business travellers, or those that are on a budget, but want to avoid unwanted surprises. Given the price and the location, it's great value, but only if you're allright with the no frills approach.
What a find

Stayed here with family for Easter last year (yes writing review a bit late!). We had no expectations except that Travelodge's tend to be dowdy, run down and not too pleasant.
How wrong were we. This place was modern, clean and for what we paid would be hard to beat.
Excellent location right across from the slightly more expensive Langham Hotel and 2 minutes walk to the river and more restaurants than we could get through in 4 day's. Two more minutes and you are across the river and into the city.
This was the perfect hotel for our needs, after all we were only after a clean comfortable bed for the night and I would recommend to anyone coming to Melbourne.
Terrific value for those on a budget!

As Melbourne is my home city this was actually the first time i'd stayed at a hotel in the city but as an american friend was over here visiting i decided to stay at the same hotel over a weekend rather than commute back and forth since i was playing tour guide!
What can i say other than Great! The room had a microwave and cooking facilities as well as a Tv, Fridge and other necessities. They also had a shopping list you could fill out and send down to reception and they'd buy anything from toothbrushes to deodorants to cigarettes for you!
Room was very clean and the bathroom of decent size.
Right next door at Eureka Tower (Tallest residential building in the world) there is the Belgian beer Cafe (Great for European beers) and Southbank our main restaurant precinct in the city is less than a min walk. I recommend Othello and World as 2 great restaurants!
it's quiet at night whereas other streets such as King St etc can get noisy at night, and the staff were always polite and genuine.
I'd definitely stay here again and recommend it to out of towners!
Great Value, Great Location

This hotel lived up to the reputation we had read about on this website. It is great value for money and I would suspect we had better views back across the river towards the city than some of the rooms at the Langham Hotel (much more expensive) that we could see just across the street. We had a room on the 10th floor on the side of the building with views in 2 directions, particularly spectacular at night.
The room was clean, in good condition and of reasonable size. The kitchenette was great for having a quick breakfast before hitting the sights each day. Good shower pressure and hairdryer are included.
Reception staff were friendly and helpful at all hours of the day and night. If they didn't know the answer they were happy to go looking for it.
The location is wonderful for easy access to a wide variety of eating establishments - from foodcourts to cafes to upmarket restaurants. (I highly recommend La Camera upstairs in the Southgate complex for a cheap but very good italian meal).
The boardwalk along the river just beyond a building in front of the hotel is a lovely place to wander and very safe at night. The pedestrian bridge across the river to Flinders Station and the central city area is a stone's throw away.
All in all we were very happy with our choice.
Pleasant stay

We stayed at the Travelodge from 11th to 16th May,2007. The room was spacious and more importantly extremely clean. There were coffee and tea making facilities as well as a microwave and a fridge. We took a taxi from the airport to Southbank and cost $50.00A, for our return we booked Skybus and only $15.00 a person one way, information is available from the hotel and airport. An enjoyable stay, the room had no outside noise , but the air conditioning was a bit noisey. We would recommend this hotel as it had many restaurants nearby and Crown casino only about 5 minutes walk. Tina c

Price of drinks
by clmbsb
Just over 2 weeks now till our trip down under and just sorting out a few minor details. In the city centre how much will we roughly be paying for a beer?? We plan on staying local to our hotel (Travelodge Southbank) as we are not heavy drinkers and don't plan on staying oit all night drinking. We will also be venturing to St Kilda for a night as we are both veggies and i here that Lentil As Anything is a great place to eat.

It really depends on where you go, but you can get jugs in the city from anywhere between $12 - $18. Expect to find the places with cheap beer packed and the places with expensive beer full of wankers. Pretty much the best advice I can give you. Also, don't buy bottled water in clubs because it can be really over-priced... around $7!!

Re: Price of drinks

A jug holds about 1125ml (40 ounces). I've got some links below for you to check out too...

Happy drinking! ;)

Basically 2 pints in English, i can handle that in each pub. Over in the UK a jug is normally 4 pints, just over 2 litres.

There was a Lentil As Anything in Brunswick too last time I was there.
Plus the White Lotus near the Victoria Markets is my favourite vegan restaurant.

Having visited Melbourne quite a few times we have found that the average price of a 10oz beer is between $3.00-$3.50 for the local brew in pub. Restaurants tend to charge about $6.00 a stubby (13oz). St Kilda has got lots of great little restaurants and well worth the trip.

Try Soul Mamas in St Kilda for vegetarian food. Very tasty. Its at the St Kilda baths. Just jump on either the number 96 or 112 tram which will take you down there.
As for drinks, expect to pay between $6-$8 for a spirit and mixer and around the same for a pint.
