One of Melbourne's best hotels

REason for staying at this hotel was for the australian rules football (AFL). I have stayed here before and was looking forward it...and wasn't disappointed. Check-in very smooth, staff are very helpful and accommodating (esp if u arrive early in the morning), the concierge was more than happy to help in answering any questions you might have regarding local transport and activities etc. My room this time was a standard room. However, it was large, very adequate for my overnight stay with a queen sized bed, television which had foxtel (some channels), mini-bar, coffee making facilities, plenty of cupboard space, iron/board and safe. The room also had a beautiful writing desk. The ensuite was very clean, in working order and reasonably large. The hotel also has many standard facilities of a 4-5 star hotel including a restaurant where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served; together with conference area, gym etc. The hote lis in little collins street at the corner of spencer street (which is a major road through the city), extremely handy for public transport - as the major train terminal is situated across the road from the hotel in spencer street - where all local, interstate and country trains terminate. There is also many trams very close by in collins street and spencer street. Melbourne, as a city, is very very good to get around on public transport. Not only is there factory outlet shopping across the road, but also the skybus station which is the bus from the airport to the city. Also across the road is Telstra Dome, a major sporting and entertainment venue. I would certainly highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wishes to visit melbourne and have a hotel that not only offers wonderful accommodation, but has a very central location, extremely helpful staff and value for money.

Unique Quality: The rooms are very large. The location is first class. Staff are very helpful.

Great Location

This hotel is located on the Corner of Little Collins and Spencer Streets. Its location is great as it is within walking distance of Docklands, Telstra Dome, Crown Casino and Southbank. It is also a convenient location for catching trams to other parts of the City.

The hotel was clean, the food was good and its price was commensurate with the service provided.

I will stay there again.

Unique Quality: The restaurant provided a buffet special that was very impressive. The room had an outlook to the West over the top of the new curved roof at Spencer Street Station towards the docklands redeveloped precinct. Although the afternoon sun could prove slightly annoying, the views of the lights at night was worth it.

Great stays time after time!

Sensational!! From the phone call to book the room to the moment we checked out I cannot fault the place.

I have stayed there three times now, the rooms and clean and have beautiful decor, the hotel was built in the 30's i think and it is art deco design. The Curve Restaurant is spacious with lovely decor and the food is not overprices and delicious!

Within 8-10 minutes walk to Southbank precinct. Slight incline on the way back. Over the road from the Spencer Street (now Southern Cross) train station so easy to get to other parts of the city.

Unique Quality: Great service, rooms are very comfortable and inexpensive. Great location for walking around town. Twin room cost us $159 per night including full breakfast!!

If you don't like any noise ask for a room not on Spencer Street.

And don't try to book during Melbourne Cup carnival, they have a 4 night stay policy, which is a shame, so on my most recent trip I wasn't able to stay here.

  • Opinion of Price: less expensive than average

Hotel corner Spencer street

by margsch

Yes, I agree with staying in the city now, it does make more sense. 2 questions: formerly Rydges, a small Hotel corner Spencer and either Little Lonsdale or Little Bourke, now has another name, would be easy access from the bus depot at Spencer station. What is it called now?
That inner city tram pass - could you tell me more about that please.

Howdy Margaret
the hotel is only a short walk away from the Southern Cross bus and railway station(Formally Spencer st station).
the city saver ticket cost 2.80 .but realy you dont need it as there is a free tram in front of the hotel take you around the city plus the free bus.

Could you tell me the name of the Hotel we are talking about please, it is a small building on the corner, dining area ground floor where you can see people enjoying their breakfast as you walk past. It used to be Rydges many years ago but is now something else.

You had me scratching my head over this one as nearly all the hotels in the city have changed their names. There's about 8 or 9 hotels along Spencer Street, but from your description with looking at people eating brekkie, I think you'll find its the Holiday Inn corner Spencer and Flinders Lane - not to be confused with the former Holiday Inn in the world trade centre and now called the Crowne Plaza. Also it could be the Vibe Savoy Hotel Melbourne, c/nr Spencer and Little Collins Street. That one is right across the road from what is now known as Southern Cross Station. I don't believe there is a hotel Spencer and Lt Bourke, but there is the Astoria c/nr Lt Lonsdale street, but that may have closed down.

Thanks David, it is the Holiday Inn, had a look at the photos and recognised it. Got the streets muddled up but then that,s typical for me.

Thanks Marg - that's another good turn from a Melb cab driver - LOL. BTW the bus depot is now under cover and in the huge Southern Cross Station complex (includes a supermarket and other shops) - easy walking distance from there to the Holiday Inn. As others have said the free city circle tram passes the holiday inn.

Enjoy Melb - again

David
