Kings Billabong is just a few kms out of the centre of Mildura (see map at Vistor Centre you can have a brochure to find your way here) and is a part of the river where it is said a lot of birdlife can be seen.
We paid this place a visit but didn't see any, but I think that we picked the wrong time of day, as it was rather warm (over 30 degrees) and perhaps the birds were well hidden.
At the Deakin Complex/Information Centre at the moment, is this beautiful mural of Mungo National Park.
There is also a wall display telling the aboriginal history of the area and the significance of the Mungo Woman find several years ago (earliest evidence of cremation). There are also several brochures with plenty of Mungo information.
I think we picked the perfect month to visit Mungo...there had been quite a lot of recent rain in the past 2 weeks, enough to green up the desert quite considerably...so much so that at times it hardly looked like desert to me at all, if not for the red sand beneath our feet.
Like a carpet of yellow flowers, stretching off into the distance.
