The history of the Midlura Grand is synonymous with the history of Mildura itself.

Opened in 1891as the Mildura Coffee Palace, this was the main accommodation and entertainment centre in the town. As a temperance town, no alcohol was offered on the premises until nearly 30 yers later. The Mildura Grand was born. Its kept up with the times ever since, bits being added on here and there for a number of years. In 1989, the present day owners, the Carrazza purchased the place.

Now, its a mini empire :)4 restaurants with an excellent reputation (run by son-in-law Stefano de Pieri - see 'Stefano's' tip on this page), 2 cafes (including one afloat), a microbrewery and pub, along with all the usual luxuries one would expect in a hotel with such a history.

Sadly, from an architectural perspective, its no what it was. The additions in time and the adding of luxuries have taken their toll, and its a somewhat non-descript mish mash of styles. The fabulous 19th century Victoriana is no longer - the closest recognisable style is the art deco of the main frontage. Its also developed on the available plot of land - so the garden feels hemmed in by the main wall of the hotel and the wall separating it from the street. The pool is squeezed into a courtyard. But inside its everything one would expect from a luxury hotel, although it also offers budget (by their standards at AUD$100 or so per night) and upscale 'motel' rooms as well as the luxury suites.

Unique Quality: Its comfy, it has great facilities, but most of these are open to the public anyway, so not 100% convinced its the best place in town to stay. Other places in the town have the same facilities without the luxury bit admittedly, but then without the luxury prices... Rooms vary - if you can afford the top whack, then you get what you pay for.

Directions: Far end of Seventh Street overlooking the river (or as close as you could overlook the river from a building)

Unique Quality: A view of the Grand Hotel from the railway station (just across the road), showing its most Mediterranean aspects.

Unique Quality: The Grand Hotel's dining room is very grand indeed, with its snowy white tablecloths and chandaliers.
The cooked breakfasts there were very filling indeed.
First you serve yourself coffee, juices, pastries, toast and cereal, and then you order your main breakfast course from the menu.
My favourite was the bacon and mushroom (and other things) pancake.

Unique Quality: The pool looks really excellent, though unfortunately, being business travellers who arrive late at night, we haven't had the chance to try it out ....yet.

Our room was attractive and comfortable looking enough, but we felt that the main drawback with it being such an historic hotel was that they didn't seem to have updated the beds for a long time, and these weren't so comfortable and let the general standard down a bit.
My husband stays here quite a bit for work so has tried out all the facilities, and everything seems great...except for this one thing (and getting a good night's sleep is a priority)

The Grand Hotel is an almost mediterranean style building, which really suits its location, given that there is a huge 'drive strip' of palm trees passing right by, and plenty of others nearby, making a great backdrop.
It also fronts on to the Murray river, which is separated from it by a road and green grass verge park. I think you could see from the upstairs room windows during the day.

Unique Quality: It's about $99 per room per night which includes cooked breakfast (which is quite substantial). I think that was for the slightly budget section which we had.

The hotel has a lot of history from the early 1900's up until today - I think it must be the most historic and well known (and certainly one of the most plush if not THE fanciest) hotel in Mildura.
The decor is quite tasteful, not too stark in the rooms, and the lobby is quite huge.

Directions: I believe it's in 8th street (or was that 7th).
