Ocean House Backpackers: Charismatic lodging right on the ocean
I LOVED this place! Ocean House is one of (if not THE) the most unique hostels I've stayed in. The outside is bright magenta, and the inside is styled after a classic log cabin. There are great fireplaces and spacious rooms, wooden floors and bunkbeds, and the location is unbeatable: right on the harbor of Port Campbell! You can look out the wide front windows and see a giant cliff sticking out into the water. The office was in a strange location about two blocks away, but they left good directions at the hostel. It's not a terribly modern place (the stove was gas, for example), but it has an unbelievable amount of charm and if you're looking for a different experience, you will most certainly find it here.
Unique Quality: Excellent views, location, and interior. I felt like I was in an old seaside cabin or lighthouse.

Port Campbell Guesthouse: New Guesthouse in Port Campbell
We stayed in the double room with ensuite bathroom but the guesthouse had two other rooms - one with with twin beds and another double (with shared bathroom), a kitchen, and a communal area with tv, woodfire stove and big veranda with barbeque. The rate also included a free breakfast (toast, tea, coffee, cereals, eggs, etc.). This was a gem of a find in Port Campbell - practically backpacker rates - for a newly refurbished cottage that was cozy, spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated with excellent, laid-back hosts. We would highly recommend to other backpackers who are looking for something nicer than your average backpackers hostel (without much added cost) and would also recommend to older travellers, couples, families etc. The guesthouse is run by a father and son - who also renovated the place. Really can't recommend it enough.
Unique Quality: Woodfired stove, BBQ, character of cottage (so much care into the set up), great location - central - right in centre of Port Campbell - within a stone's throw of 12 Apostles, Bay of Islands, etc.

Port Campbell Guesthouse: Guesthouse @ Port Campbell
Fairly new to the scene, this guesthouse had just opened for business on Easter Day 2008. And we were thankful for that as it's relative obscurity meant a room for a night for me and my mate since we had decided to wing it on a long Queen's Birthday weekend.
The host Mark was hospitable. The place immaculately clean and organised, though not opulent nor luxurious. As the house is fairly new (recently refurnished from a crumbling old house), the paintwork is still intact and everything looks fresh. A hearty fireplace was the saviour on a cold winter night. The toilet facilities are shared among 3 rooms (1 with twin beds, 1 with a double and 1, unfortunately, to be ascertained)
The cloak of night lifted to reveal plentiful space for a garden at the back. This place has potential as long as you are not expecting Shangri-La!
Unique Quality: Rustic is the key word here. The room was spartan - some slightly uncoordinated art works but despite that, comfortable. My only grouse being the impotent pillow.
Linens and towels are provided along with a simple breakfast of cereals, bread, coffee and milk.
The common area, centered around the fireplace, has a TV and a rack of magazines, mainly National Geographic.
