Travel Tips for Port Fairy

Surfing!

by Kate-Me

At first glance, when we pulled up at the waterfront a few hundred metres out of Port Fairy, it didn't look like a spot for surfers, with all those rocks on the shore and out at least a little way as well...but there they were, about 16 of them, and we soon saw why:
the waves were much bigger than at Warrnambool, and came in on a diagonal angle, rather than straight, and some of those surfers were really getting a good run!
We spent quite some time enjoying watching them from the comfort of our car (as it was rather windy, as this coast can get).

Here you can catch a koala..........well, no, maybe pat a koala........, actually you can't do that either and it isn't recommended as their bone structure is weak and cuddling a koala might seem nice but, take my advice, leave them where they are and just watch, as I do on the rare occasions when I see one. This is one place where they certainly aren't endangered as you can clearly note by the number of koalas and the lack of leaves on the certain species of gum trees they eat.
I spent about five minutes trying the get a snap of this one then drove to the carpark and there were two in the trees right in front of me!

"Historic Walk"

We took the historical walk which takes you past many of the quaint town's historic buildings. Many buildings from the mid 19thC are highlighted.
Due to little economic development after 1900 the town's old world character has remained.
The walk along the tree-lined streets reveals stone cottages once occupied by whalers, sealers and fishermen. There are also elaborate commercial buildings, bluestone warehouses, timber structures, grand merchants homes and some impressive public buildings showing the towns prosperity in the 19thC.

"Griffiths Island"

A narrow causway links the town to Griffiths Island famous for its colony of nesting mutton birds (again we were there at the wrong time of year)
At the end of the island stands the lighthouse, which is now unmanned, but was in former times a lonely posting.

Rond 3 uur 's middags arriveren we in Port Fairy.
