Travel Tips for Sorrento
Lives of the rich and famous
by Orchid
There is a little known pathway that winds along the clifftops, through the front gardens of the wealthy folk who have their own private jetty's and beaches. (one of the few places in Victoria that this type of alienation of foreshore is possible).
Fortunately, the pathway is a pubilc right-of-way, so the great unwashed can stroll through the backyards of the super wealthy and have a snoop on them as they enjoy their jacuzzis and lap pools.
So enjoy the glimse into the compounds of Melbourne's rich and famous families. Just remember to close the gates after you, and don't make too much noise

"Sailing to Queenscliffe and the Great Ocean Road"
There are two ways to get to the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne, drive west to Geelong and down to Torquay or head south down the Napean Highway on the Mornington Peninsula and catch the ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliffe, we took the ferry. Sorrento is a small town that unfortuanately gets missed by the vast majority of tourists as they head for the ferry. The highway hugs the coast all the way and is very scenic. With the radio on and the sun shining we finally felt as though we were on our way. The loading of the ferry took minutes, it was clean and we paid the lesser rate for the crossing, in a few more weeks the summer season would see a price rise, it was worth it for the views of Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne was just visible on the horizon.

Sorrento
Victoria's first settlement was in 1803, in Sorrento. 30 years before the founding of Melbourne.
It was here in Sorrento that Victoria's first European settlement was established.
The settlement was short lived due to the lack of fresh water.
Sullivans Bay was the site of the first courthouse, first public hospital, first postal service, and the first government printing office.
The first wedding, christening and funeral service were also held at Sullivan's Bay as it was the home of a camp of soldiers and convicts.
In 1835, the Tasmanian founders of Victoria bought their flocks across Bass Strait in search of new pastures, when they were greeted by a 'wild white man' William Buckley... convict and escapee from the original Sullivans Bay
Settlement.
Buckley had been living with Aboriginal friends and families in the western area of Port Phillip.
Sorrento's rise to fame as a seaside escape for Melbourne's rich and famous came about in the 1870's.

Sorrento is a historic seaside town.
Entrepreneur George Coppin established Sorrento’s fame in the 1870’s and it has never looked back.
19th century buildings of locally quarried limestone line the Ocean Beach Road, crammed with elegant eateries, boutiques, galleries and specialist shops.
From the quiet front beach to the spectacular amphitheatre of the ocean beach, everything is within walking distance. The many lookouts and walking trails really reveal its charm and beauty.
We visited this tranquil town on our way back from Phillip Island.
