Stay in a former brothel
The Golddust Backpackers is quite a nice place to stay. Rooms are spacious and airconditioned, bathrooms are clean, the kitchen sometimes and there's a small swimmingpool in the courtyard.
There are lots of longterm residents here (mainly working holidayers), so it has quite a family feeling to it. Be aware of the parties though, it can get loud & rough.
This was actually the cheapest hostel I stayed in on my last trip to Oz. Paid 18 AUS$/day for a bed in a 6-bed dorm.
Unique Quality: Free transfer from and to the train/bus station.
