Built in 1913 for Melville Piesse, the King George Hostel was originally known as St George’s hostel. It was built to expand the accommodation in the town during a period of prosperity in the farming sector. Extra work brought casual workers and visitors to the town. The premises were unlicensed which set it apart from hotels and there were shops on the ground floor street level. The heritage listed hostel still provides accommodation and has undergone a considerable amount of restoration.
