Travel Tips for Margaret River

Flamboyant invader

by TheWanderingCamel

Nuytsia floribunda - West Australian Christmas Tree - blooms in the paddocks and roadsides of the south-west corner of WA with a blaze of brillant orange just in time for the holiday season. Unique to this part of the world - one of the thousands of plants that make this region one of the world's biological hotspots - it's a rare plant indeed - a free-standing mistletoe that grows into a sizeable tree - the world's tallest mistletoe.

The flaming golden-orange of its flowers makes a magnificent show against the clear blue summer skies; meanwhile, underground the plant's parasitic nature sends its roots out in all directions in the quest for the roots of host plants from which it can draw the water and nutrients essential to sustain it through the long hot summer. It is so invasive in this seach that even PVC- clad underground cables have been known to have been pierced by its roots.

The Christmas Tree is very particular about the soil it will grow on and is virtually impossible to cultivate as a garden tree so, if you want to see it, you're going to have to make the trip to Western Australia some day.

Watch a Beautiful Sunset at Prevelley Beach

by laurakho

I think we would not have visited Prevelley Beach if we didn't stay at SurfPoint Resort. This fine evening in December summer, we drove from the Resort to the nearby seafood restaurant to takeaway fish and chips, then down to the Prevelley Beach Main Break to watch the surfers. What exciting surfing with a beautiful sunset in the background! So we watched this great scene in our car while eating fish and chips and drinking wine, and getting out into the strong wind to photo the sunset at different stages. I suppose the locals can do this any other day, but for me city dweller, this was a very memorable and relaxing evening.

Boranup Forest

by keeweechic

If you follow the Caves Road south to Margaret River you will find some of the prettiest Karri (world's tallest species of trees ) forest in the Western Australia. In the heart of the forest is the Great Boranup Maze. It has been described as a 'leg-stretcher and a mind-bender for travellers weary of the open road.

Hold the Relish

by arianne_1504 about Relish the Experience

Ok so it was the Easter long weekend. But I had been looking forward to trying this restaurant since viewing an article about the owners on Seachange. We went to make a booking - he had one table left which had to be vacated by 8.30pm - no worries we only wanted a quick meal. He suggested 6.30pm, we said can we make it 7.00pm but obviously he wasn't listening a word of what we said so when we turned up at 7.00pm, he said 'yeah well you're late, so you can't eat here now'. Nice attitude.

No worries we'll take our hard earned cash elsewhere - certainly won't be going back here.

Apart from that they never seem to be open!

NOTE: Relish closed down not long after they opened. Not surprised.

Meekadarribee Falls

by arianne_1504

Situated just before you get to Ellensbrook Cottage, is a lovely walk to Meekadarribee Falls. Aboriginal ledgend associated with Meekadarribee Falls is that two lovers eloped against the tribes wishes, however the man was tracked down and killed. When she eventually died of a broken heart her spirit lived on in these falls.
