The land of Oz - so good we had to visit twice!
by DellyM
We'd had such a fantastic time on our holiday to Queensland that we decided to return to Oz in Nov 1998. This time we thought we'd explore Western Australia. We flew to Perth with Singapore Airlines (much better flight than with Britannia). After a couple of nights in Perth we flew up to Exmouth for some diving. We then picked up our pre-booked hire car and drove down to Pemberton, South of Perth. We finished up back at Perth before our flight to Singapore, where we stayed for a couple of nights before heading back to the UK. We booked the flights, car hire and first two nights accommodation through a travel Co. called Bridge the World. No one favourite thing about Perth, there's way too much to see and do to name one thing! My favourite memory of Perth is that of any easy going City with something for everyone.
Perth Zoo... Out With The Old, In With The New
by bryINpoland
Like most Zoos, the Perth Zoo in its early days main purpose was to entertain the public. Animals at the Zoo lived in unexceptible conditions to modern day standards. They were kept in cages barely big enough to walk around in, with concrete floors and very lttle sun light.
The main goal of the Zoo, was to make sure that the average Zoo goer was able to see the animal close up and personal.
Over time the Perth Zoo has updated its facilities, and have turned things around 180 degrees. It is now the animals that come first, and the Zoo's goal to educate the public in preserving mother nature.
As a reminder of the past, the Perth Zoo has left some of their old cages up, so we could be reminded in which direction we are headed...
Freemantle Prison
by Jillworld
The Freemantle Prison is definitely worth a visit. They offer fascinating tours; the guides are good story tellers. This gaol was convict built in the 1850's and was a working prison for nearly 140 years, closing in 1991. The history is rich and some of the cells are covered with prisoner artwork, so there is something for everyone!
Byron Bay - New South wales
by DreamerDan
Byron bay - Australias most easterly point and the site of our eastern most lighthouse. Byron Bay is also known for its long surf breaks and its laidback lifestyle. Paul Hogan lives here also. The goat you see is one of the wild residents from the surrounding bush and each evening after the road gates are closed to cars they emerge to graze on the grass surrounding the lighthouse. Also one of the worlds best launching areas for hangliders, who eventually land on the beach in the distance.
Australia Day
by arianne_1504
Australia Day is held on January 26th each year. It's a time where Australians come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.
In WA, we celebrate Australia Day with a Fireworks display over the Swan River. It's usually a pretty hot day, so there's always swimming and a few drinks involved. A lot of areas of South Perth and the City are blocked off to traffic, so it's a good thing to keep in mind even if you aren't keen on joining in the celebrations.
