There are few, if any, 'luxury' hotels on the small island of Pohnpei. But the Village comes close to it. The hotel sits on the sunrise side of the island and the view from the on-site, open-air restaurant is breathtaking. We found that the service to be excellent since it reflects the generous and friendly nature of the local inhabitants. Their pay is low by U.S. standards so feel free to tip generously. If you need anything, be sure to ask. They are always eager for you to feel welcome.
Unique Quality: The rooms themselves are actually bungalos located on the estate. The hotel is outside of the main town of Kolonia, so you won't experience the congestion of traffic and people. If you're looking for a beach, your best bet is to hire an outboard to one of the local islands near the reef. The main island is surrounded by mangrove forest with one artificially created beach near the airport. Tourist come for the nature and the diving (experienced divers).
Directions: From the airport take a taxi ($2 fare/person), you'll travel over the causeway, across Dausokele bridge, then follow the main road until you enter U (pronounced 'oo') Municipality. The Village Hotel is a short, bumpy drive off the main road.
