Ngaigani Best Holiday

Our family stayed here in July 2010 and thought it was our best holiday ever. Naigani isn't a flashy resort but it certainly is a beautiful island with friendly helpful staff and very nice facilities. We are an active family with 4 "children" aged 15 to 23. We spent our week snorkeling, diving, kayaking, fishing, exploring, swimming and visiting the authentic local village and another island. The island is a classic tropical paradise. The coral reef is just off the white sand beaches, you don't have to walk way out to get to the reaf, and the fish are as good as nearly anywhere. The bures are spacious and comfortable, but could do with a bit of maintenance. The food is very good but not 5 star. One day we caught some good sized tuna, mackeral and a spectacular mahi mahi. The staff sponaneously offered to make fish n chips out of it, and they boated us around to the stunning Picnic Beach for a very special lunch. So if you're looking for something totally relaxing, or as action-packed as you want, and a bit more authentically Fijian, with great service then this is wonderful.

Unique Quality: Stunning beaches, especially Picnic Beach, helpful staff, snorkelling

Naigani Island Resort

by Jez79 about Naigani Island Resort

The website has a form you can fill out to get quotes. Scuba diving and wedding packages available. Naigani is a beautiful island north east of Viti Levu. The resort is relaxed and informal and the small number of guests (max 50) gives it a real personal feel. The rooms are very spacious and well priced (Plantation double room $70/night, give or take) and snorkelling, kayaking and various board games are included in the price. Snorkelling is great right off the shore and in a couple of hours you can kayack around the island to take in the view. There is a small golf course, pool, on site dive company, weekly trips to the old capital of Levuka (F$45 per person) and various other activities.
After dinner the staff sit around the kava bowl with the guests and sing, which is a lot of fun and a great way to spend the evenings. The whole resort has a really communal feel, though it's also marketed as a romantic getaway, which it can be if you choose.

"The Resort"

After the Coral Coast we caught a bus to Suva, then another bus and launch to Naigani Island, to the north east of Viti Levu. Naigani is about 220 hectares, with a small resort and a village on the other side of the island.

"Naigani Village"

"Meke at Naigani Village"

We happened to be on the island for Naigani Day, which is an annual fundrasing event for the village. People come from all over Fiji and there is a meke, lovo lunch and lots of kava drinking! While we stood out as foreigners, it was great to see a real village celebration, and not one put on for the benefit of tourists.

While we didn't understand all of the meke, they seemed to be having a lot fo fun. Periodically, they would drape fabric over the dancers and out power on their hair and faces. The guys would also be touched up with lipstick, which everyone found very amusing. As we all sat around watching and drinking kava, there were endless cries of "vinaka" form the audience.

"Lovo lunch"

We sat in a hall for the lovo lunch, freshly prepared but some of the villagers. The meal was basic but delicious, and it was great to sit and chat with the other people there.

"Looking out from top highest part of Naigani"

There are a number of walks you can do on Naigani. these pics are from the hike we did across the island to Picnic Beach. The walk takes about an hour and is a steep climb down, so bring some water and your snorkelling gear for the beach below. You can also kayak around the island.

"Overlooking to reef off Picnic Beach"

"Picnic Beach"

After a long climb across the island, we came to this beautiful beach. The snorkelling was fantastic.

"Ovalau"

You can do day trips to Ovalu from Naigani. Ovalau is a lovely island, and home of the old capital of Levuka. We only saw part of the island, but there are an increasing number of accommodation places that could serve as a base for further exploration.

This is the view from the back of a ute on Ovalau. You can see my hand as I tried to stay in the truck with all the bumps!

"Marist Church, Levuka"

Luvuka is the old capital of Fiji. This Marist Bros. church is along the main street.

We had to climb 199 steps to get to the top of this hill! There was a school just to the left of this picture - imagine having that view from the school room.

"An interesting poilce post"

Naigani Island Resort

Has anyone been here? The reviews on Trip Advisor really don't tell me much. I'd like to know about the diving, facilities and peoples experiences. We are a couple who like to dive and are adveturous, like to drink/socialize. Are we going to be bored here?

Hi i spent a week at naigani, i don't think you will get bored, I don't dive but the people on the island who were, were having a awesome time. The resort is a little run down but there is a swim up bar in the pool. all guests eat together in the restuarant at night so there is lots of socialising. The workers get out their guitars and have a singalong while they drink there kava.
and is a pretty special experience. It a very traditional kind of resort where the resort is the only one on the island and a tribe lives on the other side, so you'll see them working at the resort often clipping the greens on the golf course with scissors or by hand.
I did do alot of snorkelling and kayaking while i was there and the rainbow coloured reef was beautiful.
I think even though it is a little run down and having to transfer from nadi to suva then transfer by boat ( quite horrendous). It's definitely worth it.

Awesome diving and you won't get bored. Accomodation comfortable, staff great.
Am sure you will enjoy.
Another great dive resort is Dolphin Bay Dive resort. Have a look at the website. Great packages available. Biggest expense is getting there, need to fly to Taveuni from Nadi or Suva (then boat across to the resort which is actually on Vanua Levu but easier to get to via Taveuni). The diving is fantastic.
