Mango Bay: "whats a flashpacker - typo?"

by poppajon

We stayed here in early March and couldnt be happier. We stayed in the hut on the beach, the most expensive option. But they had dorm rooms too which was a very inexpensive option. Rumors about high priced water are false, because they have a free water cooler near the bar. Not quite sure what a Flashpacker is, which is what they promote it as, but it must be something like a flashy backpacker. (A little loud at night, not for the older crowd) Only problem is its quite a drive from the airport, but thats actually a good way to see some of the island. I would stay here again in a second.

rustic bures and dorms: alberts resort, kadavu, authentic fijian paradise

by vixs

THis resort is 100% fijian owned and run and is the oldest resort on the island. our stay was comfortable and the family made it memorable and easily the best time in fiji.

we turned up unexpectedly as the phone lines were down, this often happens so dont worry if you cant reach them to book. it is easy to get a boat from the airport or ferry drop of with a local, and the family will make you feel at home as soon as you arrive. The boat trip can be choppy but the scenery is stunning and worth every bump.

granma elizabeth is amazing, she looks after the kids and resort with gusto. ask nicely and she'll proudly take you around the gardens pointing out the food plants and medicinal herbs. the family history also makes a good yarn over tea/coffee

Bruce is head of the house and farms kava and taro as well as doing all the resort activities. he is boatman, dive master, surf guru, kava maker, trek leader and guide. If you want to do it he'll try and accomodate.

Ruth, 11 going on 25 is a gorgeus girl, very smart and friendly. she acts as server advisor and entertainment, while looking after her siblings, cooking and cleaning up.

there are several young kids so if you are travelling with children be prepared to loose them running wild with the locals.

the facilities are basic and not for the travellor who requires creature comforts. the shower is cold, but the water is drinkable as they have a spring behind the house. the bures are comfortable and basic, at night you are given a lantern. The main house where meals are served does have electricity when the generator works, it had broken down when we were there but candles and lanterns all added to the atmosphere.

it is possible to dive and surf the atrsolab reef, just a short boat trip away. the snorkelling is also excellent. there are several walks nearby. It was easy to waste a weeka dn we were gutted to leave so soon. we've recommended this resort to loads of travellers as we went around fiji and we'll be back as soon as we can.

almost everything is worth going for. the diving is some of the best in fiji. THe surf is gnarly. the food is without a question the best value for money. the atmosphere was also unparalleled at any other resort we stayed at. Take a walk up to the kava plantation and the veiws are amazing. its easy to fall in love with this place and the fijian life.

micheal the brother of bruce runs a local shop next door so you can grab basics and the village sells cigarettes, but we never found any alcohol. Bruces special kava blend more than compensates!
cash is prefered and there are no atms on the island so travel prepared. however they do take visa is you have to.

outrigger on the lagoon: paradise on earth

by rosie235

We chose to stay at the Outrigger primarily because they boasted the biggest pool in the South Pacific. We checked out their web site and were quite impressed with what we saw. Nothing however prepared us for the sheer beauty of the resort and the gorgeous pool. The resort provides Bure type accomodation and also superior rooms and deluxe ocean view rooms. The superior rooms and deluxe ocean view rooms are identical except that the DOV rooms are on the higher level and they also have the Talai Butler service. The Talai butler will unpack and repack your cases is requested, do your ironing, make hotel reservations, tour reservations etc. The best part of the Talai service is the daily canape's and champagne delivered to your room each evening. When they turn down your bed they also replenish your mini bar fridge with fresh bottled water. I would definitely recommend paying the extra for a deluxe room.
The Bures are located in the main gardens and although they are very gorgeous and probably quite romantic I was warned by people staying in them that they had quite a few "visitors" in the form of lizards, cochroaches, beetles and spiders. That would be enough to put me off staying in one.

They have 4 restaurants in the complex, a general store and a few other gift type stores aswell as local craftspeople selling their wares around the resort.

They also provide a free kids club with lots of great activities to keep the little ones entertained whilst you lie back in your deck chair and sip cocktails all day.

Traveller's Beach Resort: Ok place

by globetrotter06

Having stayed on the Coral Coast being at this hotel/hostel at Nadi Bay was a little bit of a disappointment. The rooms were old, the ceiling broken at several places, the walls dirty, and unfortunately, the staff was unfriendly. Despite the restaurant meals looking and tasting good, we both got sick... Would rather recommend Aquarius next door. Had similar prices, but looked so much better.

Tubakula Beach Bungalows: Quiet and peaceful

This is a beautiful place situated right on the beach. Unfortunately it's not good for swimming, but the hotel has a pool. The restaurant also serves good food, but it is more expensive than in the local restaurants.

OUTRIGGER ON THE LAGOON.: SOUTH PACIFIC HIDEAWAY

by wanderingbilly

WE STAYED AT THE OUTRIGGER FOR A WEEK IN FEB 2006.
WE CAME TO FIJI AS PART OF AN AUSTRALIAN HOLIDAY AND BOOKED THE OUTRIGGER AFTER READING REVIEWS OF IT ON THE WEB.
FIRST OF ALL THE HOTEL ITSELF IS QUITE A WAY FROM THE AIRPORT, ONE AND A HALF HOURS IT TOOK US TO REACH THE OUTRIGGER BY TAXI. ON ARRIVAL WE FOUND TO OUR HORROR THAT THE HOTEL HAD NO RECORD OF OUR BOOKING, BEING VERY TIRED THIS WAS ALL WE NEEDED, BUT FINALLY THINGS GOT SORTED AND WE WHERE SHOWN TO OUR ROOM.
OUR ROOM WAS IN THE MAIN BLOCK, THE OLDER PART OF THE HOTEL BUT IT HAD NICE SEA VIEWS AND IT WAS CLEAN AND TIDY. IF YOU HAVE A FEW MORE POUNDS TO SPARE I WOULD BOOK ONE OF THE BURES (BUNGALOWS) THAT ARE SPREAD AROUND THE GROUNDS. THEY LOOK REALLY NICE AND SOME ARE RIGHT DOWN BY THE BEACH.
THE POOL AT THE OUTRIGGER IS THE REAL STAR, THE HOTEL CLAIMS IT IS THE BIGGEST IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC. WE FOUND GETTING A SUNBED HERE NO PROBLEM AT ANY TIME OF THE DAY, THE STAFF HERE MAKE SURE YOU ARE NEVER BORED WITH LOADS OF ACTIVITIES GOING ON ALL THE TIME, WITH THINGS LIKE BEACH VOLLYBALL, AEROBICS IN THE POOL, TREASURE HUNTS AND MANY MANY MORE. WHEN A NEW ACTIVITY IS ABOUT TO START A MEMBER OF STAFF BEATS A LARGE DRUM BY THE POOL TO LET EVERYONE KNOW...DONT SAY YOU WER'NT TOLD !!!

THE FOOD AT THE OUTRIGGER IS VERY NICE AND YOU CAN BE AS FORMAL OR AS INFORMAL AS YOU LIKE. THE FORMAL OPTION WOULD BE THE IVI RESTAURANT, HERE YOU DINE IN A VERY ROMANTIC SETTING WITH NO CHILDREN ALLOWED. THEN THERE IS VALE NI KANA WHERE YOU CAN HAVE BUFFET OR AL-A CARTE DEPENDING ON THE NIGHT YOU CHOOSE, FOOD HERE ALSO FEATURES FIJIAN CUISINE, ALSO A BAND PLAYS HERE AS YOU EAT. PLUS THIS IS ALSO WHERE YOU GO FOR BREAKFAST. IF YOU WANT AN INFORMAL DINING OPTION THEN THE SUNDOWNER BAR IS FOR YOU, HERE YOU CAN HAVE A LOVELY WOOD FIRED PIZZA OVERLOOKING THE OCEAN ALL WASHED DOWN WITH A COLD FIJI GOLD.
I HAVE TO SAY WE ENJOYED OUR STAY AT THE OUTRIGGER, THE ONLY DOWN SIDE WOULD BE THE BEACH...NOT REALLY PRETTY BUT THE HUGE LAGOON POOL MAKES UP FOR IT.
TAKE A TIP FROM ME IF YOU LOVE THE OCEAN TAKE A DAY TRIP TO ONE OF THE ISLANDS WE WENT TO CASTAWAY AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL, IF WE EVER GO BACK TO FIJI I WOULD CONSIDER STAYING ON CASTAWAY FOR THE WHOLE TRIP BUT IM NOT TAKING ANYTHING AWAY FROM THE OUTRIGGER IT IS A TOP PLACE TO STAY AND IF YOUR BOOKED TO GO THERE YOU WILL HAVE A LOVELY TIME...JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET OUT AND SEE THE REAL FIJI...HAVE FUN.

Outrigger on the Lagoon: Coral Coast wonderland

by lenardt

Stayed in a garden view room but down near the waterfront which gave us a excellent view of the lagoon and reef.
Staff were friendly and helpful.
Amenities were great with plenty to do or if you choose there can be lots of lazing around the pool.
This is a family friendly resort with a true 5 star rating.
I would recommend this resort and suggest you get the cheaper garden view room if you can have the complex down near the water (rooms are as good as an ocean view room)

There is a fantastic pool side cooking hut which does great noodle and rice dishes for a reasonable price for lunch and dinner. Great for relaxing by the pool and eating.
Sunset deck is all that you would expect of a bar and eatery set on a balcony where you can watch the day draw to a close.
Small beach at the edge of the resort where you can snorkel from and view average coral but colourful fish.
The resort does reef walks most times on the low tide.

Korovou Eco Tourism Resort: Do not stay here!!

by caroline_82

I would not recommend staying here.

Food is awful and very repetitive.

No water is provided, all drinks are charged at high rates.

No free activites.

Rooms and bathrooms are filthy and smell terrible.

My best friend got food poisoning here which resulted in several days of stomach upsets.

Staff are rude, unfriendly and will do their best to rip you off.

With so many resorts to choose from in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Island groups, you can do better than this place!!

The most unique thing about this dump of a resort is that the staff (in particular the office staff) are the most 'unfijian' Fijians we have ever met - they were rude, unhelpful, and we later found out the amount they had charged to our credit card was somewhat higher than the amount we were told we were paying.

It claims to be an eco tourism resort but this seems to be more of a name than a reality - there was rubbish everywhere and no sign of any kind of environmentally friendly activity.

Nanuya Island Resort: Fiji Fantasea

by Grimaz

Magnificent is the only word to go close to this Resort. Everything is well above expectations, and run to perfection.

From the moment you arrive and are greeted by the Resort Manager Lance, you feel totally at ease and welcomed. Staffed predominantly by the local villagers from surrounding islands, the entire place has a warm friendly atmosphere that relaxes you as soon as you arrive. Be it George, Lome or Remi behind the bar ready to create your favourite island cocktails and serve them to you in the lounge which overlooks the water, or Joe and the clan in the Kitchen (which by the way is right there as a feature for all to see, a testimony to how clean and tidy it is) ready to prepare your food just how you like it, nothing is too much trouble. A beautiful dining area which is open air, with the traditional thatched roofing, and yes it was all done by hand by the Villagers in the neighbouring islands. The dining area has "weather Screens" which can be rolled down if required, however rarely need to be.

There are 2 different styles of Accomodation, the Beach Bure and the Hillside Traditional Bure (4 of each). The Bure's are a comfortable distance apart, with the central resort area seperating the beach huts from the hillside ones, and with a total of only 8 rooms, the place is never crowded. Unique Stone set bathrooms feature in each of the Bure's. It's the little things that make all the difference in my humble opinion, such as having a small insect repeller plugged in for you in your room each afternoon, ensuring that your nights are as comfortable as possible.

You can stroll the length of the island, and water taxis are plentiful for travelling to other islands close by (which is highly recommended). Every place we visited we were welcomed with open arms, and treated like kings. I have never visited a place where so many people are so friendly ALL THE TIME.

Overall, Nanuya is a total package, and will serve as the highlight of any visit to Fiji.

With a PADI Dive centre alongside the resort, which doubles as the activity centre, and a snorkelling reef running the length of the beach directly in front of the resort, this is a water babies paradise. Fishing trips, paddle ski's, diving etc etc are all at your finger tips. Ask for Mani and Mas who will look after you.

Great Reef to snorkel over, and they have deckchair cushions that double as floating beds for those of us who are feeling too lazy to even keep ourselves afloat !!! A fish feeding time is set every afternoon for those who are keen.

The service, the service, the service. Lance runs a great crew here. And everyone is so friendly !!! I was invited to join the staff in an afternoon game of Volleyball after they had finsihed work each day, which was again a highlight.

Access to all of the northern islands in the Yasawa Group is perfect from this location. Good fishing, magnificent sunsets.

And to top it all off, this is the place where the Brooke Shields Film "Blue Lagoon" was made. They picked a paradise, no doubt about it.

my rating 10/10.

The Anchorage: Fiji Fopah

by Grimaz

The unfortunate thing here is that the position of the Anchorage is magnificent !! Beyond that, it starts to go downhill, picking up momentum like an avalanche.

Arrival was very late (1am - not the hotels fault, chalk that one up to the flight delay of 2.5 hours), so we waited until the morning to start our Fijian experience. Our request for single beds for our 2 teenage boys had been missed, and we had 2 Queens size beds in the room. Requests to get a simple fold out or trundle bed fell on deaf ears until 7pm that night, when we got a bit narky and finally saw some action.

The restaurant in the hotel looks great, and is positioned right beside the pool, so you can grab a possie at Breakfast and basically keep it all day, wandering back and forth. Orders for Food and drinks were always very slow, and often forgotten all together. The food is quite nice once it arrives, if you are still awake.

The staff are very friendly, however tend to spoil that with the delays in actually doing anything.

this place has a huge potential, however currently is not perormaing up to scratch in my opinion.

Great waterside views, excellent pool. Conveniently located about half way between the Nadio international airport, and Lautoka which is where we boarded the ferry for our island adventures (see my post on the Nanuya Island Resort !)
