    NICE TUB!

If you have your sights set on this resort, start saving your Starwood points for a free stay! Otherwise, the least expensive option is about $600/night!

It was probably the nicest place we will stay! The water was gorgeous, the beach was beautiful and the room was luxurious.

Each bungalow has it's own little platform where you can use the snorkeling equipment provided for you to do a bit of snorkeling. Then there is a little shower on the platform to rinse off before going back in your room. There is also a deck with lounge chairs and a glass square where you can see down to the water.

The walk in shower was huge, as was the bathtub! I put the bathtub as my tip picture because I really enjoyed it, but the whole thing was beautiful. I will include more pics in my travelogue!

The bed was huge with a canopy and a large tv and there was a separate little room with couch, chair, tv, and end tables that you could open up to feed the fish below. It was simply wonderful! See my travelogue for more pics! :)

The overwater bungalows are fabulous and can't be found just anywhere!

From Overwater Bungalows to Budget Rooms: Accommodation on Bora Bora

  • Overwater bungalows you can dream of... - Bora-Bora
    Overwater bungalows you can
    dream of...
    by Kakapo2
As we were on a cruise ship we did not need accommodation on Bora Bora, and I was happy about it because the prices for accommodation are – with a few exceptions – just mad. But I have checked out the options, as I am dreaming of going back to Bora Bora, perhaps as part of a bigger trip with visits to Moorea, Huahine, and Maupiti.

On Bora Bora everything gets relative. If you read of affordable accommodation it normally means that it is more affordable than others on the island – not that it is cheap. Even guesthouses charge crazy prices.

Most hotels are in Matira where the biggies like the Intercontinental Beachcomber and the Hotel Matira have their spectacular overwater bungalows in this incredible translucent lagoon.

The most affordable accommodation is in Nunue which is between Vaitape and Matira.

There you also find the Village Pauline which offers budget to deluxe accommodation. I mention this because when we planned a trip to Bora Bora in 1995 (and later cancelled because of the French nuclear tests in the Mururoa Atoll), we had booked with Pauline. At the time she just had her guesthouse. Since then she has built her little empire, and this is really something special for a local who has started with next to nothing.

Her “Village” is at PK 8, at Pofai Bay (Baie de Pofai), about 3 km south of Vaitape and the ferry and cruise ship pier.

To give you an idea what “affordable” means, just have a look at rather a good website:

    http://www.boraboraisland.com/tostay.html#budget

At the “Lagoonarium” you pay for example:
8000 CFP (for two) in a bungalow (66 Euro)
6000 CFP (for two) in a room with shared facilities (50 Euro)
2700 CFP (per person) in a 10 bed dorm room (23 Euro)

And please note: You have no hot water!

Around the island we have seen houses for rent, with signs saying: Maison à louer. But I do not know how much they charge.

    The general price guide:

Deluxe: 180 Euro (250 US$) to 650 Euro (800 US$), open end, in reality, if you are a Hollywood star ;-)

    Mid range: 65 to 180 Euro (80 to 250 US$)

Budget: 10 to 65 Euro (12 to 80 US$) – the first number for camping

If you check out the prices on the hotels’ websites you will quickly find out that the upper rate is higher in most cases…

Other websites with information about accommodation:
    http://www.tahiti1.com/hotels/borabora-lodge-en.htm
    http://www.bora-bora-paradise.com/bora-bora-cheap-hotels.html

    Finally:
Most of the hotels with the spectacular overwater bungalows are located on the outlying motus along the reef, and sure, they are again more expensive than the hotels on the main island. However, you also find overwater bungalows in the Matira area, for example the Hotel Bora Bora, the Hotel Matira, Le Matai Polynesia, and the Sofitel Matira.

If you see abandoned hotels along the way, most were not abandoned due to the recession or a sudden drop in visitor numbers, but to repeated damage caused by tropical cyclones, so the resorts relocated to less affected areas. Exeption: the ruins of a failed Hyatt Regency project.

If you stay at a hotel on a motu you will surely encounter a very peaceful and quiet atmosphere. But also remember that you need a watertaxi for every trip to the mainland.

In one of my travel guides I read about “noise and traffic” you encounter at the Matira hotels, as there is not a lot of space between the lagoon and the mountains, and you should better go to a motu, or at least to the Hotel Bora Bora because it is a bit away from the road. This remark is as relative as the rates. There was surely traffic between Vaitape and Matira – but it was nothing compared to other places I have been to. And I cannot imagine that the SUV’s and the rubbish truck keep on driving back and forth during the night, so you would not be able to close an eye. Although there were plenty of cruise ship passengers on the best public beach at Matira Point it was very, very quiet. Just marvellous. Nothing spoiled the experience.

We stayed in an over-water bungalow. It was outstanding and the service was great.

One thing we did not bring was a power adapter for our US-made camera. In less than 10 minutes after calling the front desk, someone brought an adapter and power converter.

The lagoon underneath and around the bungalows is incredible. It seems like an aquarium without glass. So clear and so many different types of fish.

We stayed for 6 nights; 2 in a garden bungalo, and 4 in a premium overwater bungalo. I've read a few negative things about the garden bungalo, but we really enjoyed ours! There were things we loved about it (seemed more roomy w/ the private yard, plunge pool, and outdoor shower), but we also loved staying out over the water in the premium bungalo. In the end we were glad we stayed in both, and saved a little money doing so! We also got to check in early because our garden bungalo was ready to go, and the couple beside us had to wait a few hours for their overwater bungalo to be prepared. All the hotel staff were very nice and accomodating. In scheduling a few activites one staff member had not followed through with the reservation, but it's so easy going it didn't matter all that much to us. There is a boat shuttle that goes back and forth between the main island and the resort every hour or so. The boat schedule and connecting bus schedule are not that complicated to figure out.

You give up a little conveniance by staying off the main island, but this resort has the best views of any bar none. If you stay in the premium overwater bungalo #44 you get the PERFECT view of Mt. Otenamu. There is little to no snorkling around the resort, but in turn you can walk around and relax in the water without worrying about stepping on the coral heads. If you are big into snorkeling I'd probably recommend staying at Sofitel, but it's only a short boat ride away even from Pearl Beach.

  • Directions: Pearl Beach is one of only two resorts that has a boat shuttle pick you up at the airport and take you straight to their dock. It's very nice, and conveniant.

This place was paradise. Definitely six stars. We were there for our honeymoon - therefore it was all inclusive. The resort should not be confused with an older Intercontinental Moana resort that is across the lagoon. The Thallasso was built in May 2006 and the spa opened in Sept 2006. We were there in early October 2006 so the place seemed untouched. Our overwater bungalow was bigger than my old apt in Manhattan! It had all the upgraded amenities such as a rain shower and soaking tub in the bathroom, a huge king bed facing a picture window that overlooked the lagoon and Mt. Otemanhu (we woke up everymorning looking at this wonderful sight!), an espresso machine, 2 flat screens and a bi-level veranda/diving deck. We had everything we needed. No reason to leave the bungalow. We could even feed the fish from our living room as the coffetable opened up to the lagoon bottom. The 2 restaurants on the resort were 5 star quality. Splash and Reef had better food than any other restuarant on the island. We tried Bloody Marys, but we would have rather stayed at the resort. There is an infinity pool that overlooks the lagoon - its tranquil. In fact the whole resort is built like it was an entire spa. The actual Thallasoo spa is incredible. I have seen nothing like it. It has far eastern influences and the water used in the treatments has been welled from 900 meters below the sea level and is extremely cold and pure. In fact, the air conditioners are powered by this water. Its a "green" resort. We left for a bit to rent a boat and go diving and snorkeling at the coral gardens, but quickly returned to be pampered at the Intercontinental. If you are honeymooning and are just looking to relax, this is place to be. It is the best of the best!!
