Beautiful Overwater Bungalow

For our honeymoon, we spent six nights at the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort in an over-water bungalow and had a wonderful time. After getting our baggage at the airport, the staff took our luggage, directed us to the boat, and we were off to the Sofitel. Even the boat ride to the hotel was great with amazing views of Bora Bora on the way to the hotel. After dropping off other guests at the island, we headed to the mainland. We were immediately greeted by Bastian who helped us fill out paperwork and walked us through the amenities, etc. at the hotel. We saw him throughout the week and he was always pleasant and helpful, and even let us use his personal computer to see a DVD we purchased after one of our excursions. The bungalow was absolutely beautiful and luxurious with a glass panel in the floor to see fish below. If you leave the light on at night, it attracts bugs and you can watch the fish below eating them! There was great snorkeling right off our bungalow. It seemed like they had thrown metal furniture and other metal objects in the water to seed reefs and the marine life below was amazing. We saw wrasse, eels, octopi, and thousands of tropical fish just a few meters from our bungalow. One evening, my wife walked on the boardwalks and dropped bread for the fish while I was snorkeling below. It was amazing to see the feeding frenzy and after a short while, the fish actually figured out that I brought the food and they started following me around! The breakfast buffet was very good - I particularly enjoyed all the fresh fruit and juice. The restaurant and bar were good, but rather expensive. There is a market just a five minute walk from the hotel where we would go to get snacks, rum, and coke to save a bit on food and drink costs. Although we didn't stay at the private island, we took the boat there frequently to snorkel at the coral gardens. They have an activity desk at the hotel to help book excursions. I would highly recommend the Eco Tour (see my separate review for this. The last night we were here, it was a full moon and they had a Full Moon party at the bar with a Polynesian show and later a DJ. It was a fun night for our last night. Overall, would definitely recommend the Sofitel in Bora Bora.

Unique Quality: Beautiful views, especially sunrise in the morning. Access to private island for great snorkeling.

Exclusive and romantic

only 36 guestrooms on this prvate island situated within the bora bora lagoon. A launch will pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel dock where you will be greeted with Tahitiaan songs, flower leis, and cool drinks. This hotel is high end, about $800+ USD a night for an overwater bungelow, but it is private and exclusive. The islands best snorkling can be reached from your bungelow deck. The rooms are beautiful thatched roof with native furniture, mini bar/frig, private deck with table as well as a private sundeck over the turquiose water. Be sure to take the island 4 wheel drive tour (Ask for Joe as he is the best guide), and eat at Bloody Mary's while on the island. Scuba diving is available from the sister hotel omn the beach, and the shark dive is great.

Unique Quality: Big deck area with private chaises, great service, quiet and exclusive.

honeymooning heaven

This was a fabulous hotel! we spent 9 nights in over-water bungalow #120. We had great views of Mount Otemanu as well as teh lagoon. We had an upper deck and lower deck. The lower for sintanning with 2 chaise loungers as well as the ladder to get into the water. The upper deck is for shade and where we ate breakfast and drank wine at night.
Service was great with the staff very friendly and helpful, especially Jocelyn. There was a restaurant and bar, but we did not eat at the hotel. There is also a shck where snorkel gear and kayak's are free for your use. At reception they can book any tour you want.

Unsurpassed beauty

I definitely would recommend this hotel, one of the finest I have had the pleasure of staying at.

The food, however, is outrageously expensive, so we recommend using your refrigerator in your room and go to the local market (quick boat ride away) and stock up on local bread (but get there early 'cause it goes fast), cheese, fruit and we used coconut ice cream for our coffee. If you are a coffee addict bring a travel pot and coffee because all you get there is Folger's crystals

There is a restaurant and a bar on the Motu.

Guests who stay here have privileges at the sister hotel, Sofitel Marara where there is a pool, water activities, tennis, shopping and beachfront restaurant with a bar.

Some of the rooms are over the water bungalows; ours had a great view of Mount Otemanu. Others are up on the hillside or on the beach. They all have A/C, satellite TV and computer modems.

Unique Quality: The hotels were orignially built by Dino de Laurentis for his movie "Hurricane". Although the movie flopped, the property did not.

Over the water bungalow on small island. You can walk down your steps and into the ocean to go snorkeling. There is a hole in floorr covered by plexiglass, at night you can turn on a light and watch the fish swim by.

Hotel Sofitel Marara

by Helga67

The big building on the foreground is the restaurant and a swimming pool in the lagoon. On the background you can see the overwater bungalows. (Enlarge the pic to see the full panorama)

There are 32 garden bungalows, 11 beach bungalows and 21 overwater bungalows.

We had a beach bungalow. They are just as attractively decorated as the overwater bungalows and have most of the same facilities and amenities. There are two chairs and a table on the terrace and an outside faucet to wash off the sand when you come back from the beach.

Sofitel Bora Bora

Does anyone know the difference between the OWB at the Sofitel Motu Bora Bora and the Marara? It seems the Marara is cheaper even though it has the pool. We will be spending our honeymoon there and want it to be nice, but don't mind saving a few dollars!

the Sofitel Motu is newer than the Marara and you are on a private small island (motu), it's always more expensive but an unique experience.
