Pearl Resort is the only hotel on Manihi. There are two other accommodations but they are pensions and each is on a different motu. There is also a motel in Turipaoa village, which does not offer water view. Since it is the only resort on the atoll, Manihi Pearl is certainly not cheap, but what you receive in service, amenities, and view are very hard to surpass. There are beachfront bungalows and over the water bungalows. The first time we were there, we booked a beachfront bungalow. It was beautiful and we loved it. However, upon seeing the only available over-the-water bungalow left that week, we changed our mind immediately. The bungalow we stayed in was the farthest away on the water and from the pack. Although each over-the-water bungalow has its own deck, this one offers the most privacy. The only intrusion we experienced was the passing by of a small boat taking newly arrival tourists to their accommodation on other motus, and that happened only once and lasted about two minutes. If you like to suntan or swim au naturel, this will be your best accommodation. Nothing can compare to the experience of watching sunrise and sunset over the water from your own deck without another person's shadow nearby (except your companion, of course). Nothing can compare to having the utmost tranquillity, the utmost silence, the utmost peace for the entire stay on Manihi Pearl Resort. Nothing can compare to a swim, snorkeling, or just a wad in the water from your own deck, literally together with many schools of colourful fish, at any time of the day and night.
All bungalows are of very good size, with large bedroom, large bathroom, and large deck. All comes with ceiling fan, and we had never found one mosquito here, unlike on other islands. As in most over-the-water bungalows in French Polynesia, the glass top table in room allows you to see fish swimming underneath your feet while you are reading a book or drinking a cup of tea. Anytime we stayed at Pearl, we would only leave our bungalow at meal times, since we don't feel the need for anything else. However, if you like to see other people, the hotel offers a bar that serves very good drinks, a large salt-water pool, and a pearl shop. There are also a volleyball court and a game room for badminton and such. If you don't wish to eat breakfast in the restaurant, it can be delivered by canoe to your bungalow. | | | | Hotel Matira: Tranquility With A View In Bora Bora | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Hotel Matira is a family-owned and operated small hotel, located on the most beautiful beach in Bora Bora, Matira Beach. Although the owners are Chinese, the setting of the bungalows is decidedly Japanese-influenced. All bungalows are on stilts and have a view of either the garden or the lagoon, and the few further down by the hotel's restaurant are beachfront. All are detached and each has its own porch. The sitting room is furnished with a writing desk, a fold out futon, and a glass-and-rattan table. The bedroom has two double beds and an armoire. Separating the two rooms is a rice paper sliding door. The shower is in the sauna style, with open wood frame, wood slated bench and wood slated floor. The decor is unusual for French Polynesia. The artworks on the walls are not of exotic island women with a flower behind their ear; instead, they are abstract brushworks of mountains and rivers. Serenity is what prevails inside the bungalows, and if quiet and contemplation is what you seek, you need not to go far. Note: Beware of mosquitoes. It seems to us that Hotel Matira does not spray the vegetation regularly. Nathalie fought a tough battle every evening against the mosquitoes, and they usually won. | | | | Club Bali Hai: Best Location And Best View In Moorea | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Club Bali Hai is a combination hotel and timeshare accommodations. Club Bali Hai is located in Cook's Bay, on the most beautiful spot on the entire island of Moorea, a mile from the town centre of Pao Pao. The hotel was originally Hotel Aimeo; the Bali Hai Boys took over and turned it into a timeshare property, with a few hotel rooms reserved for non-owners. The manager and staff have been with the club for almost all their lives. They are very knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, and courteous. You have the choice of overwater bungalows, beachfront bungalows, gardenview bungalows, or bayview condominiums. Every unit has its own balcony, veranda, or deck, plus screened windows and doors, a ceiling fan, and a very good-sized bathroom. Every unit can sleep up to four people. Except the garden bungalows, all units come with a kitchenette; some also have a small dining area. Right outside of the hotel's old restaurant is the pool with a rock waterfall. For two decades, there was also a poolside bar, which was the hottest spot on the island, with live bands and half-priced drinks two nights a week. Now Blue Pineapple, a good local restaurant, replaces the poolside bar. A few steps back from the pool is a sandy beach and the bay. All the water activities start off at the bay; the sandy beach is perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
Best location, best view, great rooms, best atmosphere, best staff. | | | | Club Med Moorea: Don't Worry, Be Happy! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Club Med Moorea is a great place to spend your vacation. I did that one summer instead of staying at Club Bali Hai. A vacation with Club Med is like being on a cruise, except your feet usually touch the ground when you wake up in the morning. There are many daily activities (e.g., snorkelling, water-skiing, tennis, volleyball, basketball, boat trips, table tennis, bocce ball) and all the activities are inclusive in the price except scuba diving and a few certain excursions. Food is wonderful and wine is included with the meals. The Club Med property in Moorea is *huge*! There are more than 300 beautiful fares (bungalows) scattered throughout, each with its own terrace. The only drawback is that if you are a single traveller, you must share the bungalow with another single person. Note: Club Med Moorea is closed for renovation at the moment. | | | | Motel Albert: Cheap Sleep In Moorea | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Motel Albert is located across from Club Bali Hai and offers the least expensive but clean and comfortable accommodations on the island. The Haring family who owns the motel also owns and operates many other ventures: bicycles, scooters, and cars rental, airport transportation, island tour, pearl shop, etc. All family members from the patriarch to several younger generations are involved in every part of the businesses. Motel Albert sits on 11 hectares of green grass, lush plants, blooming flowers, and well-kept paths surrounding the apartments and bungalows. All units have kitchenette, private shower and sleep up to four persons. We have never stayed at Motel Albert but have known many members of the Haring family quite well, and have visited them and their property often. This is a place we would endorse with enthusiasm to budget-minded travellers. | | | | Prince Hinoļ: Old Hotel In Downtown Papeete | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Prince Hinoļ is located in the city centre, across the street from the waterfront, and a few steps from the Vaiete Place and the Moorea ferry docks. Although the hotel does not belong to the Ibis chain anymore, all rooms still fit within the Ibis standard of quality: simple, clean, and spacious enough to move around comfortably. All rooms have a good size bathroom, TV, A/C, and of course, a swimming pool is on the premise. The convenient location of the hotel makes it very easy to reach every place by foot. There is a restaurant and a bar on premise, but I would suggest that you explore the many restaurants, bars, nightclubs and roulottes in the area; you will find more selections and better value for your money that way. | | | | Sofitel Maeva Beach Tahiti: Hotel By The Bay In Tahiti | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Sofitel Maeva Beach is situated by Maeva Bay on the west coast of Tahiti, five minutes away from the Faa'a Airport and a short bus ride from downtown Papeete. The hotel's design is in the shape of a marae (temple), and one can see Moorea from the hotel and the beach. All rooms have private balconies that look out to the mountain, ocean, or the hotel's luxuriant garden. Many people have expressed their disappointment with Sofitel Maeva, but we enjoyed our stay when we were there. Everything we needed was within reach: a large room with quality linen and toiletries, shops in the lobby with elegant souvenir items, restaurants with many menu options, an accommodating staff, a poolside bar with an endless supply of coconuts and olives, etc. Unless the hotel has deteriorated sharply within the last few years, we would not hesitate to stay there again.
