The cyclone in 1997 destroyed all the fares (traditional Polynesian hut) except for two. Three new bungalows were built afterwards. The bungalows are very close together and from your terrace you can see the lagoon. There is also a family bungalow in the back of the garden.

The rooms are simply furnished with a double bed with mosquito net and fan. All the bungalows have a private bathroom with a cold water shower, and house linens. Don't expect them to clean the bungalow every day.

The pension has its own boat. They will pick you up at the airport and bring you to the motu in about 15 minutes.
A transfer from the pension to the main island takes about 5 minutes and costs 1000 CFP (8 EUR) per person.

This pension is owned by a Polynesian family from the Maupiti main island. The pension is located on motu Tiapaa on the lagoon side from where you have a great view of the main island and beautiful sunsets at about 5:30 pm.

  • A Beachfront Bungalow was all we needed - Maupiti
    A Beachfront Bungalow was all
    we needed

Staying on a motu is a wonderful experience if you want to get away from the touristic crowds. It's quiet, isolated, and always a beachfront right at your doorstep.

Located on Motu Pae'ao, Chez Jeanine is the only pension on that island. The owner, Jeanine, has owned the motu with her family for many years.

There are only 6 bungalows on the property, and each are clean and comfortable. The only drawback is that there is no hot water on this island, so you sacrifice a hot shower for peaceful isolation.

There are no restaurants on the island, so meals are almost compulsory when you book the bungalow.......unless you're willing to take the boat out each time to the main island and have a meal there.

But once you arrive on the motu, it is easy to feel like you don't need to go anywhere else.

Everything we needed was provided for us on the motu at Chez Jeanine.

Kayaks are provided with no charge, so you can explore the nearby islands on your own. The lagoon was filled with exotic fish, so it made snorkeling a delight each time.

For 4 nights we stayed here, and never left the island until it was time for departure!

Aside from the tranquility here on the motu, we also enjoyed the stunning views we had. Our beachfront bungalows were surrounded by lush palm trees........and fresh papaya and coconut trees.

Jeanine also grows manoi plants which serves as a side business for her. She exports the manoi oil all over the world, which is a natural skin care aid.

Waking up to this view on our front terrace was heaven.........

There is no major hotel anywhere in Maupiti. It consists of only guest houses and pensions.

Jeanine's family owns the motu where her guest house is located, and you can see constant development taking place all over the island.

Jeanine has spurned the advances of major hoteliers who have made offers to buy her out and build on the motu. She refuses to exploit the island's natural resources.

The atmosphere at Chez Jeanine is pure Local Style. Unlike other places we stayed at around French Polynesia, we were not awaken by the sound of roosters crowing (at 5am!!) or dogs barking.

We had excellent meals during our stay here, and the property is equipped with all sorts of activities. The electricity is very sparse. The bungalows are lit up along with a ceiling fan, but all shuts down at around 9pm or so.

Jeanine herself is a sight to see when you come to stay on her motu.

Quite an eccentric woman who seems to carry a lot of power within the Maupiti society.
She speaks just a tiny bit of English and mostly French, so I had to have my trusted "translator" guide me through all the fascinating tales she would share before and after our dinners.

We could never miss a meal at Chez Jeanine. Always punctually served and always announced at the top of her lungs........as she belts out: "A TABLE!!!!" (French for To the Table!) No need for the "Chow Time" bell here!

Jeanine was a delight to stay with. She's an honest businesswoman who knows how to entertain her customers!
