Hotel La Pirogue: Nice Hotel but poor snorkelling

La Pirogue didn't live up to my expectations on my Janary 2007 visit - although the cottages are cute, they are extremely close together, perhaps 15 feet away. No privacy. The food is very good, but super-expensive. There are kayaks at hand for exploring the small group of motu the hotel is set among, but the water is only 2-9 feet deep in this area so it's not very interesting to snorkel unless you're a small child. And while the man who runs the place is gracious enough, his wife is borderline surly.
Not worth the steep tariff - it ran me $430 for one night, breakfast and dinner and transfers to the mainland.

Chez Marie-France: Budget Accomodation on Raiatea

I knew I wanted to stay here when I arrived, but how I actually got to the lodge is quite a story unto itself. After hitching a ride into Uturoa, I was dropped off in the middle of town next to the Chez Marie-France truck, which my lift had spotted. He suggested waiting around next to it, and sooner or later the driver would show up and be able to take me to the guesthouse. A sensible assumption, I guess. After about ten minutes of waiting, I approached a lady on the street for some help, and she pointed out that the driver I was looking for was, she believed, a few doors down in the ice cream shop. I went over to have a look, and sure enough, just as she had described him, there was my driver, nonchalantly licking away at his ice cream cone. I finally had my ride!

I was not too impressed by this place, but it served its purpose and I had no real complaints about it. Although there are individual rooms and bungalows for those who want some privacy, I stayed in the dorm and was quite satisfied. The day I arrived, there were only two other people in the dorm, and one of them left the very next day. As a result, I hardly felt like I was staying in a dorm at all.

In addition to the rooms, there are shared cooking facilities and a nice little area in the back where you can relax, write in your journal, or just escape the heat. I quite enjoyed it. If the guesthouse is full, though, the ambience could be decidedly different (and much less pleasant). At the time of my visit, the dorm was not screened, so all sorts of tiny, irritating insects were buzzing about, although there were not so many as to make my stay unbearable.

Prices in 1997 were as follows:

Dorm--CFP 1000
Private Rooms--CFP 4000 to 4500
Bungalows--CFP 6000 to 8000

I was not charged for the lift to the guesthouse from downtown Uturoa, although guidebooks indicate that transfers from the airport are NOT free.

Unique Quality: Chez Marie-France does not really have any unique qualities, but for backpackers and others on a smaller budget, this will do just fine. Island tours and meals are available.

Bellevue Bed & Breakfast: La Belle Vue !

Located just up the hill from the main street in Uturoa, the "Bellevue" B & B is appropriately named. The island views from our room were breathtaking.

The property is owned and operated by Max Boucher and his wife. They open up their home and have built six clean and nice rooms with a private bath overlooking their garden and pool area.

Breakfast is included in the price and is served on your own private patio.

Unique Quality: Although there is nothing fancy about the rooms at the Bellevue (but each room is equipped with a TV and ceiling fan!), the romantic views are what makes it memorable.

If you don't rent a car, getting to the town center can be challenging There is no bus service that goes up the hill to the pension so walking or taxi would be your only other option.

The Bouchers have a friendly dog and an even friendlier daughter, Ti'poi. She was quite an entertainer and I'm sure charms all the guests who stay there.

Transportation to and from the airport is provided by Max and his wife.

Hotel Atiapiti

This is the only accomodation available anywhere near the famous Marae Taputapuatea.

6 modern beach bungalows and 1 garden bungalow with wood shake roofs are located in a lovely tropical garden with lots of flowers.

A french woman owns the hotel and also speaks English and Spanish. She also is a very good cook.

Unique Quality: Hotel Atiapiti also works with the Hotel Hibiscus in Tahaa, offering 4 or 6-day package plans for two people that allow you to spend 2-3 days on Tahaa and on 2-3 days on Raiatea or vice-versa.

Hotel Atiapiti

During our tour around the island, we came to this hotel for lunch. I cannot really tell you whether it is a good hotel, but during our short stay here, we liked it and are considering to stay here whenever we come back.

Unique Quality: Instead of big resorts, we like more little pensions with a familiar and relaxing atmosphere in a beautiful and tranquil area. That was exactly what we found here.

Raiatea Pearl Resort - Our room

We stayed in a garden room. It was a big room with king-size bed and a single bed, air-conditioning, mini refrigerator, television, telephone, safety deposit box and hair dryer. We also had a nice private terrace with view on the lovely small garden and pond and the lagoon a little bit further away.

See some more pics in my travelogue.
