This hotel was getting on for £100 (almost $200 USD) for a night for the room, which you would think would get you something pretty nice!

You'd be wrong in this case. The hotel looks nice from the outside, and their website does a pretty good job too. However the rooms are very dirty and badly need decorating, and the bathroom looks seriously ancient too. I was flabbergasted when I saw what we got for our money. We did get to see 2 rooms, as we asked to be moved from our first room, and both were the same.

The one thing this hotel has going for it is the location. it is very close to the ferry for going to Moorea - you can walk there in a few minutes.

The other thing to bear in mind is that Papeete hotels have a reputation for being very bad and very expensive, so this may be a standard hotel!

    Dirty rooms!

Sofitel Maeva Beach: An Older Place but Nice
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • "Maeva" means "Welcome" in Tahitian.

We were certainly did feel this upon our arrival. Although this hotel is a bit shabby around the gills and for a Sofitel, definitely in need of some sprucing up. But there still was a certain charm about it and we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless.

We were first offered a very "bright room" with twin beds done in Gauguin colors (pink, orange, yellow" with a white tile floors and lamps that were as small as a postage stamp. The bathroom had a raised, round sink with a high faucet that when the water was on it shot past the basin! Oops.

The room was too "loud" (too much color) and the twin beds were not on our adgenda so the hotel graciously changed the room.

The next room was a bit more staid and a bit on the "old" side but after that riot of color it was a relief. We had a King size bed, A/C, a refrigerator and a small TV. No in room web hook ups here.

Breakfast was provided and a delicious one it was. Buffet style with every kind of international breakfast food imagined.

The Le Truck (the public bus service of French Polynesia) is just past the roundabout near the hotel.

The hotel houses some cultural artifacts in the foyer of each floor of the hotel from Polynesia and Melanesia. Among the ones that stood out was a communal food bowl in the shape of a canoe (people would gather to drink or eat from it and a ritual ladder (totem) from New Guinnea.

    Hyatt Regency Tahiti: Spectacular
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The rooms are nice and big with a seperate dressing area with mirror wardrobes. An enormous balcony overlooks the sea and Papeete in the distance. Airconditioning, en suite bathroom, mini bar, telephone, TV, hair dryer and all the usual finishing touches.

The Vaimato Fantasy Pool is a dream. Rocks, bridges, waterfalls, tunnels - all very freeform with slides and Jacuzzi. It is the first pool I have seen with a man made white sandy beach one end. Beautiful grounds with luxuriant vegetation. There is a pool restuarant and snack bar which serves the normal light bites such as sandwiches and burgers. Great fruit cocktails.

The hotel is built clinging to the hillside overlooking a black volcanic sand beach. Floor one is on the top, floor ten at the bottom! It is known as the "Upside Down Hotel".

    Facilities include:
    - banquet room
    - bar(s)
    - boutique
    - canoes

Sheraton Hotel Tahiti: Close to the Airport, Great Night's Sleep
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • On our first day of travel, we ended up arriving at the airport at 11pm, which did not leave alot of room for sight-seeing. The taxi ride was not too far from the airport, but we paid through the nose because we did not know how much to pay (you should only pay 1000 xpf) or so.

The hotel had a very nice reception area, but I have to be honest, we did not see much else of it, because we had an early morning tour to head out on, and checked out at 8am!

We did try to have lunch, but I was not going to pay 30 bucks for it!

    Hotel Tiare Tahiti
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Hotel Tiare Tahiti is located right on the waterfront of Papeete, only 6.5 km (4 miles) from the Tahiti-Faaa international airport.

It's a good hotel when you want to stay in the capital of Tahiti as it is only a five-minute walk to the park, shopping center, yacht harbor and waterfront promenade.

It's a five-storied building with elevator, breakfast corner, and 38 rooms.

The rooms are fully furnished with a private bathroom, an air-conditioner, a telephone, and a TV with local and free international cable programs. Most of the rooms have a balcony.

    Room with a view
  • Tip Rating:
  • Picture was taken on our balcony in the Hyatt Regency Hotel. You have a magnificent view overlooking Matavai Bay.

When Captain James Cook sailed the Endeavour into this bay in 1769, he sighted a single tree with bright red-orange flowers growing on the promontory above the bay. He used the tree as a navigational landmark and named this reference point "one tree hill". Although the old tree has disappeared, this lookout provides a spectacular panoramic view of the island of Moorea, the Sea of Moons, the coral reef and lagoon, and Tahiti's majestic mountains.

    Tahiti Country Club
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Back in 1994 this was a nice moderate hotel with 40 rooms on the northeast coast of Tahiti.

    Update 2004:
This hotel is closed for the moment. A new 100-room three-star hotel is planned, which will be operated by the French company, Nouvelles Frontieres, as part of the Paladien chain.

From the swimming pool, you have a beautiful view of Moorea.

The hotel is situated on top of a hill and your room is located against the slope of the hill. Each room has a large balcony overlooking the Matavai Bay and Moorea.

There is a little black beach with snackbar, which can be reached by a shuttle bus.

InterContinental Tahiti Beachcomber I-C Resort: How close to the airport?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights, in an overwater bungalow (Motu). The room was lovely; well decorated with a great view of Morrea. Unfortunatly we realised just how close we were to the airport when the planes started landing in the middle of the night. We were woken twice on our first night by planes flying so close their lights shone through the curtains. The whole room shook and the noise was unbearable.

    Intercontinental Moorea: Moorea
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • My stay at this hotel was wonderful, the staff were very nice and the hotel had everything we needed.

We stayed in an overwater bungalow it was away from eveyone else and very private.

The dolphin centre is great you can swim with the dolphins and also get pictures taken with them.

The swimming lagoon is also great and you can hire small boats to visit a nearby Motu.
