Where to stay in Noumea and the rest of the countr

by custardpomme

Stay on Anse Vata beach. This is the prettiest beach with quite a few cafes and restaurants. The city is nice to hang around in the day, but at night can be a little boring and sometimes a little frisky. There’s nothing lovelier than strolling along the beach after dinner with an icecream.

A great budget option on Anse Vata is Le Lagon. Directly across the road from the beach, some rooms have kitchens and their own restaurant is nice. There are also a number of motels just behind the hotels on the beach. Or, if you want to seriously treat yourself, stay at Le Meridien. This is a beautiful luxury hotel also on Anse Vata beach and the restaurant does a lovely, albeit expensive buffet dinner.

I have heard good things about the youth hostel in the city. Book ahead. Great views but a steep climb to get there!

If you venture out of Noumea, do yourself a favour and stay at a gite (pronouned zcheet). These are traditional Kanak huts run by the family who will make you feel very welcome.

Kuenda Beach Resort: Only overwater bungalows in New Caledonia

by tryhard

The Resort is a 10 minute trip from Noumea over the hills to the beachside area of Nouville. The resort itself is quite well constructed in a tropical pacific theme. It has a few overwater bungalows over the lagoon and many beach front and garden bungalows which are very comfortably appointed. The resort is 3 1/2 - 4 star. HOWEVER, the beach is only OK and the best parts are open to the public and get crowded. Often the public will have hired out all the paddleboats and stuff which is really annoying. The cafe/kiosk on the beach front is quite nice but gets busy.
IF you think of taking a walk around the seemingly pretty surrounding hills, DON'T.
You will be absolutely staggered by the amount of rubbish that litters the ground. There is barely a square metre that is not covered in refuse. That was really disappointing.
I wouldn't stay there again. Rather my recommendation is to check out the youth hostel for cheap but comfy digs or one of the Ansa Vata motels. They range from about $85 Australian pn. to $400 pn. Your choice!

Unique overwater bungalows but you may be the local attraction.
